Re: Football Chat Thread - Euro 2012 edition : Mon Sep 17, 2012 10:44 pm
I don't disagree about the goal line tech. And I think they are trialing some of those systems at the moment.

But penalty decisions where the ball is still in play are going to the major problem. Attacking sides are going to be screaming for the video ref, the defending side will probably be breaking. There's going to be huge doubt while no one knows what's going on. The ref in the middle is going to stop making pen decisions because he won't want to give one when it's not.

And then, even if we do get line and pen technology players are going to be pushing for throw in decisions to revert to the video ref.

TBH I hope VR's do come to football because I do approve of them. But I can understand the difficulty of implementing them. And I do think that there is far more of a grey area when it comes to football penalties than there is over RL tries.

VR decisions being made during open play obviously wouldn't work, but I don't think we can just accept things the way they are now. Maybe technology isn't the answer, but maybe getting more referees is? One in each half? An assistant for each side in each half? IMO, if a referee can get closer to play and get a better angle for viewing, the chances of him making the right call, or getting more consistency in his calls, will be much higher. They say that X% of decisions are currently correct in the current system, but the flaw in decision % is so many decisions can be 50/50 and most referees often struggle for consistency in their calls.

At the end of the day, action needs to be taken. They obviously can't make technology work in open play for things like fouls and even offsides, so much of it can be interpretation, so they have to invest in giving 'humans' the best chance possible to make the correct call. IMO, giving one/three men this role isn't fair at all and doesn't work to the required standard.

He's not the only one, I could have done an endless list as pretty much every player does it. Danny Guthrie done it the other day against Spurs, took a tap to his face, lay on the floor for a good twenty seconds until the ball was kicked out. Soon as it goes out he's fit enough to stand back up. For me it should be an offence worthy of a ban, simply because fans don't pay £40 a game to see somebody ruining the spectacle.

FWIW, Welbeck's dive against Wigan was worse than Suarez' effort at Sunderland

And so you aim towards the sky,
And you'll rise high today,

Surely an official stood on the byline, yards from the post, would have seen last night's 'goal' and others that have been missed over the years??

Video technology is needed, but in the meantme, 2 extra officials, as used a couple of years ago, could do the job without much difficulty?

Even they have got calls wrong though. See the Ukraine/England game at the Euros (granted the outcome was correct as he was offside but still)

Unlucky City! What a game, almost as high in quality as Everton v Newcastle.

Can someone tell me why Mancini picked Maicon to play against Ronaldo? Roasted him. Yaya was very impressive, Barry less so, he looks very round in the dark blue kit.

Are you having a laugh? High in quality? The Everton v Newcastle game was entertaining but isn't what I'd call high in quality. Long balls on the regular from Newcastle, little control from either side, very open defending and mistakes galore. It's pleasing on the eye, but it was hardly Barca v Real, was it?
