Cole's a class player and always has been. He doesn't do as much flash stuff as Baines, but he isn't Chelsea's main attacking threat so they don't need to utilise him like that. He's still good at getting forward though, he regularly makes runs up and down the wing all game. Baines has clearly raised his game whilst Cole's career is coming to an end, but Cole has been superior to him for pretty much every year of his career barring 2012. Cole obviously isn't getting back to those standards so Baines will probably come in. I imagine his dodgy defending will get exposed by some of the better players in the world when he comes up against them, though.

And so you aim towards the sky,
And you'll rise high today,
Fly away, Far away,
Far from pain....

I'd agree with most of that, though I'm not sure how what Baines does could be construed as 'flash'....From what I see he is a straightforward attacking full back, which, in the modern game, is what full backs are required to be.

I agree his defence is pretty average and Cole is superior in that aspect of the game, but if you isolate the last 12 months, then I believe Baines is the better player.

Saying that, whichever player Hodgson decides to go with in the near future will not let England down and will certainly be one of England's best players.

Well Baines takes set pieces and has goals to his games, that's pretty flash for a full back.

I was never the biggest fan of Portsmouth but this is very sad too see. Who is to blame here? Millan Mandaric? Harry Redknapp?

In the wake of today's spending limit initiative...

Sacha Gaydamak was the one spending big big money who caused the original 'boom' and subsequent bust by effectively just walking away wasn't it?

Very sad to see this happen to any football club - an absolute travesty and people need putting up against a wall and shooting for it.

...and I think it's unfair to blame Harry Redknapp for this kind of thing. It's not his fault that he's the first port of call for fairy-dust chasing football club owners who want to start throwing cash around that they or the club can't afford to go chasing some ludicrous dream. I'm sure he's never held a chairman's family hostage and demanded 30 million quid in a transfer window...

I tried to tell people many months ago that Joe Hart is sh*t, massively helped by having Konoany in front of him. We had vidic missing for 3/4 of last season and I said then that if City ever list Kompany for a decent period they'd be struggling. City need to get rid of Hart & Barry, both not good enough.
