Sad news about his death.

His life and cricketing career obviously said much about the apartheid regime in South Africa and its effect on sport. But it also paints a fairly unsavoury picture of the power the establishment wielded in this country at the time. It beggars belief that a player could score 158 in a test match and then not be picked for a tour, on supposed cricketing grounds.

One of the amazing facts about him was that his career in English cricket largely covered his late 30's. Apparently he fibbed about his age when he came to this country and had turned 35 when first played test cricket.

sad to hear the loss of Basil d'Oliveira the ex England & Worcestershire cricketer

seems ironic he should pass away just as the racism card is still being played all these decades later - Dolly, from being a very fine test cricketer has his own place in sporting history

RIP Dolly - thanks for the memories (even when you used to batter Essex !) - condolencies to his family

the whole Vorster regime was utterly disgusting - I regularly worked in South Africa in the 70s and the treatment of the black people was outrageous - even the animals were treated better...

we have come a long way since those sad days but a lot of work still needs to be done as we have seen recently - talk about 'mans' inhumanity to man' ?
