Easy Cup Progress For Wigan Warriors Over the Red Devils

The Super League sides have entered the Betfred Challenge Cup as we launched full steam ahead into round six with the opening fixture, chosen by Premier Sports for Friday night broadcasting, being an intriguing fixture between the Wigan Warriors and the Salford Red Devils.
Both sides came into tonight's game on the back of confidence boosting wins last weekend with Wigan defeating the Castleford Tigers and Salford taking the scalp of the Leeds Rhinos, but the bookies thought that there would be only one winner and with the Red Devils getting a fourteen-point start on the handicap coupon, they were expecting the Cherry & White adorned, nineteen times winners of the famous old trophy, to be the ones making progress.

Happy with that. It was a Wigan like performance in a knock out game and we’ve gone away from them too often this past few seasons. A big shout out to Sam Powell. I’ve backed him to the hilt over the years but there wasn’t much of a defence for the last two weeks. He bounced back in fine style tonight. He needs to keep that attacking intent to test defences.

Far better than last week - we looked much more solid. They marked Field out of the game but we didn't need to be too flashy in attack. Much improved from the forward pack - Liam Byrne works so hard and has taken a big step forward this year, Bateman and Mago played well and Sam Powell was all over the place.

Always puts a dampener on games when you may lose a couple for the coming games - fingers crossed for KPP and Leuluai.

Tommy was a similar one to Vete on Thornley first game of the year which received a 2 game ban.

Hoping KPP not too bad.

Solid enough performance but Salford we’re dreadful, dread to think what there completion rate was.

We’re still a work in progress - not been overly impressed with our attack this year, mainly relied on Jai Field magic.

Havard was excellent I thought.

I think the fact they did a number on Field was a real positive. If Cas had done that last week I’m not sure we’d have won but we sorted our defence this week and found other ways to trouble them. We need the wingers and halves to be far more alive to the space in behind they were leaving on the edges because it was a budget Saints style of defence and we absolutely will have to target that space on Good Friday to stick in there and have a chance of winning the game.

Said the same with the Vete one to my mate. They’ve set the precedent on that now, it’s 2 games, so we’ll take that. Thornley has missed 6 so far and will probably miss another couple yet, so they can’t take Greenwood’s injury in to account.

God's little acre

Couldn’t get there tonight due to the lurgy but sounds like a good solid cup performance.

Salford didn’t help themselves from what I could tell on the commentary but to nil an opponent is still pleasing.

I may have misheard it but I thought Peet said that Field had an injury on post match interview.
Hopefully I’m mistaken as we’ve got a tough 3 weeks in front of us.

I didn’t see a problem but who knows. KPP is injured and Tommy will get 2 games for his tackle, so that’s a couple of absences these next 2 weeks I guess.

I wonder whether a French - Field - Cust combo will be considered. It would be good to think Harry Smith can come in and do a great job but his confidence looks rock bottom at the moment - a few games in the reserves might be best for him atm.

Somewhat lacking in the entertainment dept but we're in the next round and that's the main thing.
