I remember when Maguire left feeling gutted and thinking how great it would be if we ever got chance to get him back but he looks to be burnt out to me. I’ve never seen a coach who looks as desperate to win games but he drives everyone so hard that it must be a brutal environment to be in. He looks ready for a break from the game when I see him recently.

He does seem to have the “burnt out” look about him,to me he was always was in thin ice at west’s given their poor form and for Hastings to go there (off topic I know)seems a big risk as like not there will be as new coach installed by the time he gets there.

For me Maguires time has been and gone in the NRL but hey I’m wrong all the time

Looks like he'll soon have an enforced break from coaching - never really got going for him at Wests. Their defence was dreadful at the weekend - as it is across the bottom half of the NRL. Some wonderful games and some great tries being scored but a handful of clubs are letting in tries we'd be slating SL clubs for.

Id still like Maguire back at Wigan but doubt he'd consider it. SL was a stepping stone for him like it is for many Australians - I think he left 2 years into a 3 year deal at Wigan when a job came up. No criticism of that - just the way it is. I wonder whether there is something in NK"s theory that the team is fatigued due to Maguire demanding too much of them - maybe a bit similar to Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool atm.

A bit of a feeling that he will get you 2/3 good seasons and will spark an underperforming team. Obviously not working at Wests however.

He does look to be stressed every time you see him.

Best Wigan coach of the last couple of decades at least IMO. I think a lot of that came from improvements in fitness and wrestling to (legally) slow the tackle. We have those things in place though now, I'm not sure he would be able to come back over and revolutionise us again in the same way.

I still think the defensive intensity that he instilled in us, is still with there. There's only one player (Tommy) who played under Madge, but that approach to the defensive side of the game was carried through a number of iterations of the side imo.

Agree with that. There probably would be a club here where he could come in and change the whole place in the way he did with us but I’m not sure it’d work at Wigan again. I wouldn’t mind seeing what he could do at a club like Catalans. He’d rock that whole place and put foundations in place for years to come ‘if’ he got enough buy in from the players. He’d be a nightmare for a guy like Kasiano.

Fingers crossed he comes through the other side at West’s. He did so much for us and left one hell of a legacy, so to see him fail isn’t nice.

It really does seem like his time has come and gone. He's massively underperformed since 2015 so I'm amazed he's even still getting head coaching roles.

He took Souths from World Champions to below mid-table fodder in the space of a couple of years. I've always wondered if he would've done the same with us.

The difference between successful teams and one-hit wonders always seems to be how they cope with losing big players which naturally happens when you become successful (the best players want more money but in a salary capped sport).

When Souths lost Burgess to RU they seemed to lose a part of their identity. When we lost Sam Tomkins to the NRL, Wane was smart enough to change the way we played and we still made the GF for the next 3 years. Similarly when McIlorum left - a huge hole left around the ruck in defensive intensity and aggression that we had to fill.

I think Sam Powell right now is better than any version of what we got from Mcillorum. I don't think Maguire would work again. He did brilliantly for us but got a massive helping hand from being able to bring Finch, Hoffman and Lima over. Our fitness levels now are better than they were under madge imo, we just need to be more destructive in attack. I'm very happy with the direction we are headed in though providing we can replace hastings and French. Silverware required this season though. Want to see us back in the CC Final.
