Cracking news, got the potential to be the best prop Wigan have produced in the Super League era IMO.

Without a shadow of a doubt and we can probably go back a distance before superleague. I can’t think of many/any I’ve been as impressed by in my time watching the club. Early days for the lad but he doesn’t seem the sort at all to let things go to his head and if he doesn’t go to the absolute top I’ll be amazed.

Superb news. He’s done right by himself there IMO. He’s young, raw and plenty of time to have a crack at the NRL should he so wish later on in his career. Really looking forward to seeing him develop and I hope he hits the potential he clearly has

Great news, perhaps a sweetener before news of French/Hastings leaving breaks

French or Hastings may well leave but Havard is staying and that's brilliant news.
IL & Rads have done well to keep him.

Fantastic news.

Just hope we keep him away from playing 13 so he doesn't morph into another generic back-rower e.g. Partington.

I agree with that and I think the aim should be to build him up to be playing 60/70 mins at prop on a regular basis. We haven’t had a guy capable or good enough to do that for a very long time. I would also say with Partington it suits him more to be a forward utility that you can switch between prop, loose forward and even second row. He’s not as big as Havard and isn’t a huge metre maker but he brings plenty to the side. He’s aggressive, he brings intent and he’s got good hands on him. I’ve said before out of him and Smithies, I’d rather see Partington play loose forward and I’d look to use Smithies a bit wider in the second row.

Is there much of a difference between prop and loose these days? I think they use them the same way now unless Lockers is playing.

Cracking news, he’s already a great player and will only get better. Thank god he wasn’t given the dreaded 4yr deal which normally means a player leaving after 2yrs.

I’ve been banging this drum for years. The old 13 link to the halves role is dead and buried (for the time being anyway). Props are becoming that link as more and more are taught to ball handle instead of trudging it up the middle as it were in my playing days. Thus the 13 can be a dual role player, a prop and a back rower dependant on the play, offensive/defensive line set up which is why I’d like to see Smithies handed the 13 shirt when Lockers hangs it up.

If you want a fine example of what the ‘modern’ 13 is, look at Victor Radley for the Roosters. Hits hard, runs hard and is an all round forward able to do all roles except hooking.

Re: Ethan Havard signs : Wed Sep 16, 2020 8:47 pm
The point I was trying to make was that I’d rather be be more of an Alex Walmsley or Liam Watts than a James Graham or Adam Cuthbertson. We need forwards who can make meters as well rather than just linking up with halves or finding the floor. It’s no surprise that all of our recent losses came whilst no props made over 100m (Cas away this season an exception with Havard over 100m).

It would be great to finally have a Wigan prop making meters after contact, running onto a ball at pace, stepping at the line and making breaks rather than just hitting their knees and passing left or right.
