And would the situation been any better in the past three seasons under Wane with the poor financial position and Covid19 to contend with?

Perhaps Wane could see it was time to get out!

Covid has brought a whole series of problems, no doubt about it but, talking purely about our league position, I do think it would have been better under Wane.

The point I made, though, and the point everyone seems to have been missing, was what was the point of bringing in Mike Danson? I am hoping that he will be the logical successor to IL, once IL feels it is time to hand over. Someone to oversee the general safe keeping of the club, to make the correct decisions on and off the pitch, sponsorship, youth development and so on. Importantly, we would have (and currently have) someone with the wealth to bring in a better calibre of player than we seem to be aiming for now.

Perhaps the plan is for Danson to take over as owner once IL does decide to step back, in that case maybe his investment was on the one hand a place holding deposit so that he remains as front runner when the day comes for IL to sell up and on the other hand was also a helpful injection of capital to get the club through last year to ensure it will still be around to be taken over. Further funds may only be forthcoming should he take over fully from IL.

i agree, i think one thing that was evident when Wane was coach was the continuity from junior through to 1st team. If a youngster was called up, they knew their job and what was expected of them, and very often is seemed to be seamless (i know it wasnt perfect and Wane wasnt perfect), but at the minute we just seem to be relying on a moment of individual magic to get the wins, whereas the structures were in place when Wane was in charge.

SW had to deal with losing his big players (transfers out) and injuries, i would argue no more or less than AL, so on a like for like i believe that SW would be getting more out of this team than AL currently is

Re: Rumours and signings v9 : Tue Jul 27, 2021 7:55 pm
I'm glad to see Waney back. I just get the impression that the "joined up" progression from junior rugby to first team rugby perhaps isn't what it should be and he's offered to look at the whole structure again.
Whilst he might find it difficult to stay out of team matters when the losses happen, it will also be the case that Matty Peet i'm sure will appreciate an experienced ear to listen to his questions and opinions. When it comes to Wigan RL who wouldn't be interested to hear what Waney has to say on a given subject? I'd be all ears!
I feel more confident about the playing and coaching set up knowing Waney's back at the club than I have done than anytime recently.

As for Mike Danson and his involvement, when he acquired a share of the club he'd have paid an amount to IL for that share. That amount might have been the sum that IL wanted to keep the club in financial credit. The game, both clubs and governing body, are looking for private equity to keep the game afloat. IL has gone and found his own source of private equity for Wigan RL. The club and all us supporters will be better off for that, I for one think bringing Danson in is a financial master stroke.

They are two completely different points.

What has Hastings or French (last year) individual moments of magic got to do with younger players coming up and knowing their job?

I also don’t see any issue with the youngsters “knowing their jobs” I think the youngsters have performed admirably over the last few seasons.

It’s our over reliance on our younger players and underperforming senior players in the main that has been the issue, not the younger lads being integrated into the team not knowing their jobs.

I came across a post online this morning about the possibility of Taukeiaho from the roosters coming over to SL next season. Really good goal kicking prop forward for those who haven’t seen him play…if a team over here would be able to sign him then that would be a very big coup.

Totally agree. To be fair the pipeline was probably a bit kinder to Wane in terms of the number of starting-quality players who came through in his tenure:

Wane - Powell, Crosby, Williams, Burgess, Manfredi, Hughes, Sutton, Gildart, Davies, Marshall, Partington

Lam - Smithies, Smith, Havard, Byrne

Well Lam has only been here 2 years and Wane was here for 7.

True but what I'm (perhaps poorly) trying to show is he got some real talent coming through that I don't think Lam has benefited from. A lot of the guys on that Wane list were ready to be regular starters as soon as the debuted, and were some of the best in Super League in a short time. That's not really true for any of those I've picked out for Lam. If you combine those two lists I'd say the top 7 players all came through under Wane
