I wasn't saying that Field would be the ideal half back, but he has played there in the NRL

If we do go to the NRL, there's some very uninspiring names coming up as looking for contracts eg Ash Taylor, Corey Norman, Anthony Milford, Matt Moylan, Kyle Flanagan. Unfortunately, these are more realistic than Shaun Johnson etc

None of those jump out and, ironically, we're moving into Wire territory with guys like Milford and Moylan. Flanagan would be good if we didn't have Smith, but I'd take him and his dad as a combo.

Ash Taylor would probably be my fave, but wouldn't have been 1st on my list.

People will hate this, but I'd offer a Sam a blank cheque and get him home.

All currently in talks with NRL clubs also by all accounts. Very slim pickings.

Despite what Nathan says Field is a fullback/half he’s played plenty of games in the NSW Cup and a handful in the NRL as a half.

I personally prefer him as a 1 but given what is out there I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start in the halves next year and whilst maybe not a superstar he would still probably be one of the better halves assuming the recovery goes well.

I don't know how we can say he would probably be one of the better halves when he is such an unknown. He hasn't yet done anything to justify being first choice for us IMO. Surely we have to be bringing in an experienced partner for Smith. I can understand of we have been outbid for Williams, I wouldn't want the club to hit the skids all because we felt we had to sign one player regardless of cost, but I can't understand us running with a halfback pairing of less than 100 professional games between them.

2022 has been written off as a rebuild for the 2023 season

Some disappointing signings on the way

He has a style that suits SL and would work outside an organising half. He would need go forward though. The comp isn’t filled with top quality halves so I think he’d rank as one if the better ones.

I agree about bringing in an experienced quality half would be the better option but to be honest at the moment I don’t see where he comes from.

Hopefully it has been resolved a few months ago when we as a club knew Hastings was going or the club have an ace up there sleeve but with the way things are at the moment I don’t see much coming from the NRL as I think most of their halves will simply move clubs over there not head to these shores.

I think at the moment and the way the world is the appetite for a few years in SL is at an all time low.

I’d take the guys info on the other site with a pinch of salt. We upped our offer for Williams, pulled out, put offers in for Tomkins, Tom Davies, Thompson and Holmes, had them all turned down and then went the other way and decided to go nowhere near the cap all in the space of a few hours on Monday. The only time he ever puts a name on a rumour is when a player signs elsewhere and he then goes ‘yeah it was him we wanted and that’s why it hasn’t happened’. Williams was coming but might not but might do but only on a verbal agreement basis and if he doesn’t then he’s changed his mind and he’s still coming but now he’s not but we’ve put in a late bid and now he’s not coming. All updates that run on a timeline alongside what your hear in the press anyway.

Milford has to be worth a punt in SL, still only 26/27. Plenty of years left. Even Shaun Johnson would be a good signing at 30.

Moylan is a bit of a biscuit and continuously seems to have injuries especially to his hamstrings if i remember correctly. Ash Taylor and Corey Norman i wouldnt take.

Guys like Milford and Taylor seem to have really lost their way in the NRL and they would be gambles bit both have plenty of talent IMO. We have seen plenty of guys in their situations come here and thrive in a less scrutinised environment (although maybe not at Wigan). Johnson would cost a fortune and the other two I wouldn’t touch.

I'd give Milford a chance, he's been the fall guy at Brisbane for the poor way the club has been managed. Also being on a $1m a year contract wont help.

^ exactly this ^

We could have all predicted that Gildart was leaving, that Hastings and French didn't want to come back, that Williams may sign for us, no warrington, no us, no warrington...
