Briscoe has married to a Hull girl, and now they have a family. He's highly unlikely to even think about leaving. I thought he recently signed a new contract also?
To much emphasis is placed on the fact that a player's British. Briscoe's a good fullback but isn't anywhere near the caliber off Amos, Hodgson or Webb, yet because he's English he's rated to be a better player than he is.
The same could be said for Shenton, he's up there with the best British centre's around, however when compared to other centre's in the league who happen not to be British, he doesn't look that impressive.
I'd also hazard a guess that a top British player commands a higher salary than an overseas player of the same ability, purely because of the fact he's got an English passport.
but you cant have a team full of overseas players.
obviously they may not be as good, but every team can only have a few overseas players, so if you have the best british players then most of your squad is going to be better than most of the other SL teams players.
you can talk all you like about how some british players are not as good as some overseas imports, but at the end of the day, if your making a SL winning side, the core of it will be british players, so you might as well get the best british players.

We in England don't produce good quality backs therefore we have to buy them in from overseas, we do however create plenty of good forwards that are comparable with those of the Australians. Wigan for example are very lop sided, are backs are predominantly Antipodean where as the majority of are forwards are British.
All I'm saying is good British backs are few and far between, and even the best aren't comparable with those of the Aussie's, yet because there English they command a premium when it comes to their salary. Most of Wigan's quota goes on backs because of the poor quality of British backs on offer.

Watch the amateur youth game, and it's amazing how often a lad who's always played well at centre or winger, for example, suddenly gets shunted into the pack when he grows a little.
I'm sure that if the Mal Meningas of this world had been born British, they'd have been shifted into the forwards and ended up as unremarkable prop forwards long before they were old enough to gain professional recognition.

I wonder whether the potential shift to summer rugby for the amateur and junior game, will have an impact on how we view are juniors and the positions their best suited to. After all a summer game should encourage a more open attacking game.
