You only have to look at St Helens last season. Farge is put out for the rest of the season and Dodd replaces him without any problems like Smith had to put up with the poorer Wigan pack, especially in the front row which left a lot to be desired.

Perhaps, that why Wigan have signed three new props for next season and released Bullock and Clarke!

I agree. Smith needs a good pack to play off. We don’t obviously know how good (or not) the pack will be moving into 2022 but we have no reason to doubt the ability as it stands. I’m really looking forward to seeing Smith and Cust partner up in the halves and seeing whether or not Smith has developed, stagnated or gone backwards.

I know some have their doubts but I don’t doubt for a second any of those actively want him to fail.

Roll on 2022!!

Pressure off Smith initially, Cust and Tommy starting halves. A lot of 2020 games Smith would start on the bench and have a positive impact when he came on.
