Williams at 6 looked the same big gamble at the start of the season, and now look at him!

Undoubtedly.

That being said there's another talented guy, who was rated higher than anyone else of his age group - Ryan Hampshire.

Maybe he needs a full 12 months, like Williams, to prove his worth. A gamble I'd like to take is replacing Smith with Rocky. Plenty of ifs but the upside is arguably the best club produced half back pairing we've ever had.

The following statement earlier in the thread which came from "Wiggin" says a lot ,How will he get in the team in 2017 with Williams and Smith still around?.

That statement sums up what has been the feeling about the Ryan situation put out by the Club (officially or unofficially) that he will not play halfback for the Club unless as a last resort.

I have this feeling that it is cut and dried that if Hampshire goes out on loan for next season it will be the last we will see of him in a Wigan shirt.
This will be substantiated if the news about Sam turns out to be bad and means he may have to miss a few matches at the start of the season and Ryan still goes out on loan.

I will be shot to pieces by this post but the reason I have said it his because over the last 2/3 months the situation has gone very quiet after all the clamour on this site that Ryan had to be given a chance. As if the situation is accepted.

It's an interesting situation Wigan are holding on to Hampshire and Tierney without playing either.

Tierney is never going to get a chance but the club seem intent on him seeing out his contract, not fair, at his age he needs to be playing. I think the Tomkims situation will potentially affect the Rocky deal to Cas which basically would penalize 2 players. Tierney who is a fullback but is going to spend another year sat on his hands whilst a halfback stands in for Sam whilst he is injured, if that plays out I think both have been let down by the club.

I can only assume Tierney is being retained as cover for our wingers because even if Hampshire goes out on loan and Tomkins is injured we have Gabe Fell who is a better fullback. He's played on the wing for Workington on dual reg so presumbably he'll be doing the same thing again. Probably not the best thing for his development but then every club needs depth and anyone who signs a contract could find themselves being a squad player.

The situation next year is slightly different. The teams who are running U23/reserves will require bigger squads to service that competition. Jake Shorrocks is unlikely to play for a major part of the season and no doubt other injuries will occur. We don't know the situation yet with Sam.

This morning I was speaking to the father of a Superleague player currently out with a long term injury. We were discussing player welfare and how the clubs in general don't help enough with players vocational/education training. I din't realise, but it seems that all the professional contracts have it written into them that a player is only entitled to six months of his contract money if he has to retire from the game through injury. Any more is at the discretion of the club.

This is the oddest post I have read in a long time. Basically you don't think that the club should have squad players as it is unfair to not play them? Tierney will likely get his chance next season. If he plays well he will keep his place, if not, he won't. Rugby League, like any professional sport, is a meritocracy. The club isn't keeping Tierney against his wishes, he is desperate to succeed here.

By the way - Hampshire won't get in the Cas team ahead of Dorn, Roberts and Gale. It makes no sense to me to send him there. He will be needed at Wigan.

Why won't he?

Gale was a very average players prior to going to Cas - why wouldn't Rocky see something similar should he get game time?

It almost seems to the new thing on here to discredit the obvious talent the lad has.

Just seen that Idris has been released by Penrith due to personal reasons.

If he's looking for a change of scenery including a bit of travel etc then SL could be right up his street. I know guys like Hoffman and Pat loved the opportunities that living in Europe opened up for them.
