Why not? They could sign someone else, he could get a bad injury or lose form. Look at Shaun Ainscough, he scored 17 tries in 17 games in his first season, including 16 tries in his first 10 games. After that he only got 1 more game in the first team, his career went massively downhill and now he's a part timer at Batley. I'm not saying that will happen to Burgess but it shows how quickly a youngster can go from hero to almost zero (no disrespect meant to Ainscough there)

It'll be really interesting to see how the lad goes this year and what his attitude is like if he is indeed leaving! Any drop off in effort or quality and I expect we'll see Manfredi in.

I think he'll go pretty well though. He seems a good lad and I think he's the type of player Wigan will hope to see back at the club when his time in Oz comes to an end. On a side note he's meant to have put some weight on this year as well which could be interesting. If he's as quick now with a bit more weight it could be devastating.

Agreed. I expect him to build on a great season last year too, and, as you say, in the unlikely event that he doesn't for whatever reason, Manfredi has shown himself to be very capable. I think the Roosters are shrewd enough to tell Batley part-time contenders from the rest.

One rising star who featured the majority of the year was actually on £8k a year on his existing/previous contract. There is no middle ground between young talent and first team, the gap is massive and unless we can plug this with RFL affordances we'll lose more

Why can't Wigan pay him more than 8k now? What's stopping them?

Can't pay more if they won't accept it.

I don't know anything but say it's Burgess that's being talked about. Rumour has it Wigan have put a contract on the table a long while back but he won't sign it and is holding out to move to the Roosters. I'd imagine he's still on a very modest salary but Wigan are going to give him more money without him committing to added years on his contract.

He is not holding out. He is just fullfilling his existing contract before moving on to aus.

On the other hand players use agents to help them get the deal they are worth. Clubs will do what is right for their finances not always in the players best interests. It's a short career and these guys are worth every penny they can get.

Not denying that some unscrupulous clubs might want to take advantage of someone without representation. But as soon as you allow someone to base their wages on how much you earn, they become the major problem as their own greed kicks in, muddying all discussion thereafter. If the players' unions were more to the front in this respect, I'm not sure the issue would be so manifest.
