Exactly, this is key. We can't be stupid enough to think that we will have a team entirely of Wigan produced players, but if we can mix those players with the best english players in the game, we won't be far wrong.

I haven't seen anything amazing from Shenton and certainly nothing to get me overly excited if his signing was anounced, I would much prefare to see the likes of Thornley and Marsh given an opportunity in the first team whether its with us or on loan to either a superleague or Championship club. i think George Carmont looks like he could play for another year anyway, he broke the line a couple of times on Saturday and is pure class IMO..

As much as some would love to dream of the day when it happens not all of our talented youngsters are gonna make it at Wigan. That’s one fact we can all bank on.

A club like ours which keeps producing quality youngsters season after season, decade after decade isn’t going to be able to keep all of them.

Now if a quality young player like Shenton becomes available then unless we honestly believe we’ve got a world beater in the reserves then we can’t hold back. At the end of the day Shenton is a current England centre and when you compare him to other centres around his age group i.e Bridge, Atkins, Goulding, Wheeler etc then he’s head and shoulders above them.

Some times you’ve just gotta bite the bullet if there’s a quality youngish player out of contract who will not only improve the team immediately but will give a decent level of service as well. We can’t keep all the youngsters we produce but you’ve gotta make sure you keep the Ainscough’s, Mossop’s, Joel’s and Tomkins of this world.

With that being said it’s one of the main reasons I’d be in for Brough at the end of the season along with LMS as a replacement for O’Carroll.

Fully understand the point you make.. but having seen some of the quality players I mentioned in the reserves(U20's) and although I am no expert they should be given a chance to prove themselves before we fill our squad up with what seems at the time, Good Business... At the moment which probably contradicts the point I made earlier about not being a signing I would excited about. I will back MM to make the right moves with both with the Wigan younsters and any future signings... In Madge we trust..

Agreed.

We've got to be big enough to admit we won't always produce the quality of player we need in every position and that sometimes we'll have to bring in guys from outside.

If we look at the best side around at the moment in Leeds they produced rafts of their own players but still didn't neglect the opportunities to bring in quality from outside the club in Senior, Lauititi, Ellis and Peacock. They have been 3 fantastic players for Leeds in positions they didn't really produce any homegrown players in.

If we have opportunities to bring in guys like Shenton and McArthy-Scarsbrook we should take it imo because these are the top players of the future. They may not be at the level of a Senior or a Peacock yet but you'd like to think we now have a coaching staff in position that can improve players at Wigan and not make them go backwards.

Defiantly and if that means we have to end the dreams of a few promising youngsters on our books then sadly that's the way it's gotta be.

I realise one poster called it ‘good business’ but I’d much rather call it opportunity spotting.

If we can spot talent like Leeds did with Senior & Ellis or Saints did with the likes of Long & Fozzard then we should go guns blazing for it.

Shenton most defiantly fits into the category of the above mentioned players. He’s young, very talented and not only would be signed for the here and now but he’s also got plenty of years ahead of him as well.

LMS, Michael Shenton, Danny Brough, Richard Owen, Gary Wheeler, Larne Patrick.

They would be my ones which could be with us for the next maybe 5 to 10 years.

With the obvious James Graham and Sam Burgess added to them.

I think we should be scouting pig polynesian kids in the under 20's toyota cup IMO.

Get ahead of the game so to speak.

Regards Shenton, i think he is still a very rough diamond. Athletically he has it all although physically i think he is lacking. I do rate him do not get me wrong but i have a nagging doubt he will ever be top class, I have faith in Maguire though and he has shown what he can do in the past working with developing players so if he deems him a worthy signing i do not think anyone can argue against it.

In all seriousness I think your right. We should be having a look about to see if we can find a young Inga, Iro, Lauititi etc out there somewhere. We should be looking about in all sorts of areas really.

I'm all for us bringing young lads through but at times we'll have to bring in players from outside the club and they don't always have to be household names.

We're keeping our end up for rugbyleague in terms of bringing young, English players through so we shouldn't feel embarrassed to look outside of the club or overseas for players.
