The way I see it is that players are encouraged by their agents to use Wigan to increase their worth.

Taylor at Hull KR, signs for two years at Wigan and then can command top dollar in SL elsewhere. Goulding will probably be the same.

Lets look at Dudson & Flower, their value will have increased significantly.
Looking at the extreme, Sarginson who has only played a dozen or so matches has shown much promise. If he decided to leave at the end of this season then he'd earn a better crust at Widnes/Salford/Cas....much more than if he'd stayed with London.

The jist of it is: You've played for Wigan, your net worth increases.

Not really the same with Goulding though, he's been with us since he was a baby. It's true, though, that most Wigan players will be sought after by smaller clubs, partly because of their fitness and partly the way they've been trained.

The Wigan club do have the option, as I understand it, of a further year.
They could activate this then inform Taylor and any club interested that he isn't leaving except for a fee of say £300k. That would frighten off any club.
As he would be able to leave after the end of 2015 the club would and could dictate when and where he plays.
Interesting to see how the club play this one!

In the SC era there is simply no point holding a player to ransom when they don't want to be here. It's pretty clear the club have activated the extra year to ensure that they at least get some money back for a player who they spent a transfer fee on in the first place. Was the initial mistake only signing him up to 2 years, or was this something the player insisted on before he came here?

We might never know his true reasons for him wanting to leave, but it is pretty clear that he wants to move to Hull. I'd rather we let him go at the end of the season, command a decent transfer and bring in a replacement who actually wants to be a Wigan player.

I wouldn't have thought the SC would have a bearing on the matter.
After last year's departures we must be £100ks under the cap.
I was just thinking they may play the "don't mess with us" message out.

Not this season, maybe, but next definitely. Why have a player taking up decent chunk out of your SC to not play them just to "send a message" when it's much better spent on a player who actually wants to play for us.

Lenagan won't run any sort of risk of losing out on a fee. He will never play hard ball with any player and hold them to a contract. If any player indicates they want to leave then they will be allowed to for a fair price.

That's why small clubs and underachieving clubs like Salford and Hull can even pick us off.

Not doing bad on it to be fair.

If rumors are true I hope we have some big plans for recruitment from overseas. Taylor must be replaced and I do not think there is a SL based prop that would improve us.

Centre is another spot where if Goulding goes we are desperate to bring in some real top quality and have been for some time.

Taylor and Goulding out, promote from within, get Thornley back fit but bring in 2 quality signings up front and in the Centre and I would be comfortable with that.
