A lot of companies actually give discounts to customers paying with debit cards - there is still a minimal charge for debit transactions (about 15p IIRC, compared to 2-4% for credit cards). I work in online retail and all of our fees are calculated into the SP, there is zero transparency and it's a much better business model for it.
Business know most people have no choice but to pay it. And at the end of the day, a 1% fee is not a lot compared to other places. The worst is probably cinemas where the fee is about 30% of the cost of the ticket.
Paying for the privilege to purchase is profiteering, plain and simple. Either add it onto the overall cost of the ticket or don't charge it at all, it just pisses your customers off. Wigan will probably claim it's an admin or postage fee or something silly. Whereas it will most likely go straight to IFL's pension.
