Just for context - Thompson's current contract (if the figure of $800,000 is correct) equates to £430,000.

Thompson has said he feels like he’s got unfinished business in the NRL and wants to stay there. Just a pipe dream I suspect.

The positive news is that, if true we are looking at and chasing top draw players.

Can't disagree but wigan do like to sign players with obvious injury records which makes no sense to me but on his day great player but huge risk

Think people are misinterpreting the $800k/£430k number. There’s no chance Wigan will pay him that, that’s not his market value in the NRL even.

Think it means Wigan have given him a bigger off than the Dogs were planning too.

They’ve been on a signing spree the last few years with Kikau, Burton (who got a new improved deal recently), Addo-Carr, Mahoney and Crichton (for next year)

All international or origin players.

I’m guessing the dogs would try to retain him for about half/60% of his current salary. And our “massive” offer is just more than that.

Not sure if i want him, might be controversial but honest. His time in the NRL has been riddled with injuries and has suffered multiple concussions and time on the sideline for them.

If he can prove his fitness then fair enough, just can't say i am confident he is and after the George Burgess situation not sure how confident i feel taking on a player who appears to have recurring issues.

Add on the fact we are reportedly offering a huge 4 year contract than even the bulldogs (who throw money around at players for fun) then this could bite us big style. I assume it is less then his current contract, but must still be significant.

One thing i will say is that the rumour seems to have come from the mole who is well respected and often bang on with his info in the NRL. However, i am not sure what his SL contacts are, but i find he is not as accurate when it comes to our league.

Bit of a difference between Thompson and Burgess imo, Burgess was coming off a chronic injury, approaching the later stages of his career and no NRL club would touch him for this reason. Thompson has had injury troubles and concussion worries but to my knowledge it’s nothing underlying and to my knowledge when he’s played he’s been very good. It’s a risk but players like Thompson don’t come available often so it’s a calculated risk I would be happy we took, although with the emergence of Byrne and Havard I don’t think it’s as desperately needed as it was a couple of years ago.

I've said for months on here if not a year that if he comes back to SL it would be to Wigan. This doesn't surprise me however I personally think he will stay in the NRL. Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up with Holbrook at Gold Coast.

Matt Shaw basically confirming our offer will be a lot lower than his current deal.

He expects him to stay in the NRL though as that’s his preference and he’s got a Mrs there.

We’ll see but glad we’re in for a big time prop.
