I like Goulding too but we have 2 centres who are easily better than him. I would hope that when Carmont and Gleeson leave we could replace them with an equally good centre. If Goulding is to be that man then he's going to have to improve and the only way to do that is getting SL games.
The other problem is by playing Goulding and Pryce in the reserves, they're holding back the promising centres at that level.
Couldnt agree more. In fact i saw on the official website that in the friendly this weekend, because these 2 were at Centre, our most promising Centre prospect Ian Thornley was played at 2nd row, how many 2nd rows do we actually have? We've seen it time and time again where promising backs are turned into 2nd rows, i dont think we can afford to do this with Thornley because we will end up losing him.

I agree.
Like Phelps, I think Goulding is going to need to up his game drastically some time soon. It's not that he's not a fairly decent player, it's that, with new coaches in place, a large squad and a feeder line from our healthy youth set-up, I feel Wigan are surely reaching the stage where they'll be looking to put real quality on the field in every position.
Carmont may well retire at the end of this season. It's unlikely that either Thornley or Marsh will be ready for the first team shirt at that stage, so it should pass automatically to either Goulding or Pryce - but I have to say that, on current form, neither look a preferable option to us making an exciting signing.
Is Goulding going to be the new Aspinwall? Showed masses of promise in his early days, but never seemed to kick on at fist team level. I hope not, but I'm beginning to wonder.

I was speaking to someone who's involved at an SL club and they thought Thornley would make a better second row than a centre.

Too often in Britain we've moved lads to the pack because they're big. I'm sure we'd have done it with Mal Meninga, had he be born over here.
And Inglis, and the rest of the Aussie backs! TBF it has worked, British forwards can match any IMO, but if he's doing an excellent job at centre anyway lets just keep him there and build towards our backs matching the others also!
I've seen them bomb a quarter final, bottle a semi final, finish as league leaders, but I've still, never, seen the Wire win the league Doom and gloom, doom and gloom
watched karl pryce meander round in the gym the other day with as much effort as we have seen on the pitch. got me wondering at what point we should cut our losses with the lad? i thought at the time it was a great signing but he just hasnt done anything for wigan, at all. also got me wondering about IL - we were told at deanery school in first FF that pryce was a 1 year deal with an option of more. how many did we sign him for and why??? it wasnt like he had a promising first year!

I think we can safely assume that Pryce is on relatively little. With IL's record for prudence, there's no way he'd hang onto him under any other circumstances.

His first year was a write off due to injury. Wigan knew this when we signed him so what would have been the point in paying his wages and nursing him through injury just to let him go at the end of it.?
Also like Cruncher said it's safe to say he's on pittance wages and maybe IL thought with Pryce doing well in the reserves last season he'd see what happens with Pryce under Maguire and a new coaching team.
This year is a make or break for Pryce that;s for sure but giving him a new 1yr deal last season was defiantly a worthwhile gamble imo.
Current thoughts - Mago out or get running up them plantations, get fit or get rid. Maybe a back up halfback, someone with a bit of experience on a short term deal. Big tall strong running second rower, like a McMeekin or Sironen type back rower.
I once saw him in McDonalds drinking his drink without a straw because it meant getting up off his backside to get a straw...... get rid now.
I also saw him drop 50p and was too lazy to pick it up so left it........get rid!
Come on fella's let's give him a chance eh? Let him have a few games in the first team before we make a judgement, clean slate and all that.
Everyone has a clean slate this year and I have been a big critic of Fielden the last few years but he seemed to have improved a hell of a lot against Crusaders and beack to his old self swatting people off and that, well done Stu!
I have also been a big critic of Roberts and Riddell but they also have clean slates, Roberts has really impressed me with his new found desire and pace and looks the real deal as I always thought but now he has the desire. Riddell looks good also, did nothing special but still a good player.
Just need Karl Pryce to get the chance to show us what he can do.
It seems to me that the whole team has been given a clean slate this year. This includes everybodys Ex-scapegoats like Amos, Piggy and to a lesser extent J tompkins.
