And i'm still confused as to what games we would have won instead of lost last season if we'd had an 'enforcer'.

Still can't find a single one after watching them multiple times.

It has appeared for some time that MM is mainly going with what he's got.
He is giving himself time to see how players perform and recruitment for 2011 will start early this season.
From the loan/dual reg announced today he's settled on his squad, with having the forwards sorted Davies and Farrell have gone for experience to Widnes. With Ainscough going there as well it seems MM's back up players are to be Goulding & Pryce.
Good move for both clubs as IL does want another west pennine team in SL. Leigh may have been favourites two years ago but Widnes look very good candidates for SL in 2012.
Wouldn't surprise me if we have a couple more going out under the same terms as these three lads. None can go to Widnes as the max is three from any one club and four in total.

Re: Rumours and signings 2010 v1 : Fri Feb 05, 2010 12:43 pm
Ratchford - good young player, wouldn't know how he'd fit in with Sam, Joe Mellor, Stuart Howarth though - would you be signing him as a starting 13? 17? squad player? and how would that affect the others (the next club he signs for will have to pay a myleresque wage imo)

Brough - Player I like in many regards, great kicking and organising game which we've been missing for a while, doubt he'd sign for anybody as anything other than a first choice 7 on a good wage now though. And that's something I don't think we can offer unless we're sure one of the lads won't make the step up.

Shenton - good player who I like, but again any move i'd expect him to be a first choice centre and a decent wage increase so you'd be looking at a replacement for Carmont or Gleeson and a decision that we're sure we can't fill the gap ourselves, in which case i'd personally be trying to target an NRL centre.

LMS - good young prop, seemingly very settled in his current team so I'd suspect any move would be for a nice big wage increase. Could be a possibility when some contracts are up, is he the right choice for the wage though? I'm not sure.

Briscoe - 'defensively solid' but uninspiring creatively fullback, who i'd expect is on a good wedge since he was tempted away from FC to KR. Not sure he's upto the wage he'd command for a move and actually add much more than we've already got.

It's important when we're thinking about new players to think about where they'd fit in, who they'd either replace or block chances for, and the wage they'd command to sign.

In regards to Briscoe, Brough and LMS there defo is room for them at the club.

Briscoe vs Phelps-I agree there isn't much between them. Phelps has the upper hand in regards to attack were as Briscoe has the upper hand in defence. Either way as many have said before the quality of SL full backs is such that both would be better than 90% of the FB's out there. Who ever we chose out of the two I’d be happy either way but it would be stupid not to look at what Briscoe is asking for when his contract is up.

Brough is the one there is most defiantly room for. Deacon’s playing contract is up at the end of season and I truly believe his organisation and kicking game will be a major addition to our team. Now Deacs is coming to the end of his playing days and there is no one who will realistically be ready to fill his role next season. Yes Mellor is a good prospect but with his serious injury and the time out we really need to ask ourselves if he’ll be ready to step up next season. Brough could easily come in on a 2 year deal with another year option and do a very good job for us.

LMS is a player who I like and I’d love to see him at Wigan. He’s hands down better than O’Carroll imo and with both Fielden and Coley off contract there is potential room for him. Say Coley and Fielden leave and we bring in LMS and Bailey those two with Prescott and Feka would make us stronger.

I appreciate and agree with your sentiment (bar Briscoe as I feel he offers nothing over Phelps and for far more money), I just think you're really underestimating how much some of these players currently command salary wise (they're as far as i know big earners at their clubs) and that it would probably take more than that to bring them here, which is why it's not a simple comparison v Phelps, Deacon, O'Carroll etc.

We're really going to have to see how the likes of Coley, Fielden and Deacon go this season but if all 3 were to leave at the end of the season my targets to replace them would be Luke Bailey, Mcarthy-Scarsbrook and possibly somebody like Brough but I think we could well just promote from within(to replace Deacon) with guys like Mellor, Howarth and even a more established player like McIlorum being contenders.

Hopefully though all 3 of the current lads will have good season meaning we won't have to replace any of them. The best way of building a squad is to just keep making the odd tweak and not have 4 or 5 out and 4 or 5 in every season.

Not sure if it's been covered already but Willie Mason is now a cowboy.

Have we missed out?
Not sure he'd have been worth the money we'd have had to pay but surely he would have given us the type of bullying prop we're missing?

Have we missed out? In short, no!

There's a reason this lunatic has struggled to get a club in Australia. He's a major disruptive influence wherever he's been. The Mason of old would have perhaps offset that with his play but unfortunately the Mason of today isn't the Mason from a few seasons ago.

I wouldnt be looking to replace Deacon just yet. I thought he looked good last night and offered us something different in attack. His chip for Phelps try was superb. Also he is not that old and could easily do 2 or 3 seasons rather than the one everyone is assuming.

As for Phelps I think we should see how he goes this season. I like the way he attacks when receiving kicks rather than amble up to the opposition and surrender as is the trend these days. His high ball defence is suspect but with Radders and Hampo there this can be improved.

Deacon looks like he could be one of the shrewdest moves we've made in a while and is making a good impact from the bench. He controls a game so well and just seems to steady us up.

I'd imagine he'll do more then just the year and I really hope he does.

The side needs stability.

I agree with that NK. I said after the Wire friendly that he could turn out to be the buy of the season and I think he showed why last night. His kicks constantly had them on the back foot and the way he had time to reassess the situation and change his kick to Phelps from his original long one into the corner was pure class. As you say, he brings a different dimension to our play from the 2 runners when Tommy and Sam are on to a more tactical game when he is on. Gives the opposition something extra to contend with and, in certain games, could meant the difference between a win and a loss.

The good thing about Deacon aswell is that he's linking up well with the other halfback and last night with the fullback in Phelps who kept chiming into the line. He's getting them good clean ball and allowing them to use their pace in abit of space on the outside.

He's simply taking the pressure of the backs of guys like Tomkins and Leuluai and allowing them to do what they do well and cause problems. He looks the perfect foil for the par of them at the minute and long may it continue.

I think Maguires tactics look better aswell. Unlike Nobby he's getting the halfs to link up and play as a pair.
