We’ll have to wait and see if he’s a starter or is coming in as a squad player. You need squad players regardless of how much money a shareholder has, to fit everyone under the cap. In fact other than marquee signings you’re never going to feel any financiers clout unless the salary cap is binned.

With these rumours around Thornley and Gelling also then it appears we are going for size at centre. Both are 6'5".
I'd imagine neither would arrive with a hefty price tag.
With, hopefully, Williams returning then there will be a decent amount of salary cap space for a prop or two.
Thought we'd be looking to sign a centre but never considered either of these players.
I do hope we can sign a couple of props who will be 6'5" and the appropriate weight.

Thornley
Bibby
Williams
Smith

I'd be seriously happy with that. Plenty of size, pace and a few lads can cover more than one spot too.

Add a decent prop to the mix and it's a strong mix, especially when Byrne, Havard and Smithies will be 12 months older.

Thornley has looked good this year. Can't see him signing to be a back up player. If Wane is coming back maybe he's going for what he knows. Wasnt aware of any Gelling rumours - wouldnt be a fan of that one.

Have I missed the Gelling rumour?!

I’d be comfortable seeing both him and Thornley back if he could bring in 2 additional quality props along with Williams obviously.

Gelling would be extremely useful in this side at getting us out of our end. There are very few better at that but with the baggage he comes with, I think you’d have to pass.

I don’t know what to make of the Thornley rumour. I’m not for it, nor against it. Just a bit like ‘meh’ primarily because a centre isn’t what we need right now - a prop is and secondary I just wonder if IT is the centre for us. It could be a real shrewd signing or it could be one we barely remember happening.

Gelling is an absolute no though. Been there, done that and he’s not improved one iota.

I thought he was a cracking player for us. One of the project signings that was a great success for us.

Yes he had the odd brain fart, but his meter making contributions were massive for us and his unorthodox style always caused opposition players issues.

Still playing cracking rugby now and now his legal issues have been resolved by a court of law I see no issue at all with his signing.

I think he contributed significantly more to the team in his time at Wigan than his errors cost us.

In a team crying out for big meter makers Gelling would be a God send.

Now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying we should rush out and sign him, but if he did sign I wouldn’t be against it as long as it didn’t impact on us recruiting the middles we need.
