As I said, you can't compare an Aussie with a lad from Scholes with regards to seeing/missing family members and how much emotional stress that has.

I'd just started typing almost the exact same thing. I can't see their teammates begrudging them a bit of time with their families. I definitely think it's a far bigger situation in the eyes of the fans than it is in the eyes of the players. They will know them, see how going without their family affects them on a daily basis.
People are also looking at the negative of future antipodeans expecting this treatment. What if this convinced Hastings and French to stay for another year? What if it is used as a way to convince future overseas players to sign for Wigan instead of another club who shows no flexibility? We know how many of them leave due to homesickness, I know sometimes that may be a ploy, but it happens too often for it not to sometimes be a genuine issue.
How many of us even know what happens at this point in pre-season? For all the majority of us know, they could still be focusing on running and lifting weights, which Hastings and French can just as easily do at home. Leave the club to decide their pre-season arrangements, and understand that we don't have a right to know all the factors that have gone into those decisions. Start judging them when we play our first competitive game of the year.
