Genuine question here - why isn't it an option to play Field on the wing? He's relatively the same kind of player in regards to size and skill set as French.

He has very similar strengths ie pace and flair.

He however for me is a much more natural half. He has played at half at the top level and is more of a controlling player.

French has the pace and flair and has played wing and fullback.

I remember there were some calls for French to be a 6 when he signed, fueled by the fact he got the 6 shirt.

He had a few cameo appearances there during games and it didn’t work.

It’s the intricacies of the game that are very different. Positionally expecting a half to play on the wing is asking a bit of them.

As I said on another thread, French is a utility outside back who has found a home at 1.

Field is a half that can play 1 he isn’t a winger simply because he has pace.

In reality Hankinson is a player who can stand on the wing. That is a long way from being a winger.

Don’t disagree but he is an outside back and even without another signing is still 5th option.

I don’t expect many other clubs in SL would be in a position to call on a player of Hanks ability as fifth choice back up winger.

Come 2021 we have loads of halves but are short of wingers.
Manfredi may be fit, Marshall won't, Burgess will be at Salford.
Lam may decide to play Field on the wing to get him out there getting game time and seeing the game plan and moves unfold.
When Marshall does return a back three of French, Marshall and Field would be the fastest in SL and by a long way.
A powerful pack, excellent halves and that back line would be some team and a top squad.
In his first season here I would be quite happy to see Field start on the wing and moving to the halves maybe when the pitches firm up.
It's looking like one heck of a squad for next yeafr.

Just because he is quick it doesn’t mean he should be shunted on the wing.

He is a half or a fullback.

French moves to the wing for me if we are struggling with Field at 1 and Smith coming in at 7.

1. French

7. Hastings

With Manfredi, Marshall and Bibby on the flanks. If 2 out of those 3 are out then I’d be looking to move French to the wing and Field to 1 as above unless we recruit more cover.

If as expected Burgess leaves then we are short on the wing.

Marshall is will be back July/August which is the bulk of the season. Leaves Manfredi (excellent when fit but injury prone) and Bibby. Halsall is the only other recognised winner in our squad and he is still very raw.

Whoever suggested Ryan Hall on a one year deal isn't a bad shout.
