The scouts perhaps could do better locally when good class players like, Ben Currie, Tommy Makinson Stefan Ratchford etc and more recently Jack Welsby have decided to sign for other clubs, rather than Wigan.

Currie and Makinson both played for Wigan scholarship so that's nothing to do with the scouts.

Exactly, Currie was offered more by Warrington which also may have been also the case with Makinson going to St Helens and now also with Welsby. As for Ratchford, he may be one of the many players who also have been also offered more money by other clubs or advised not to sign for Wigan by parents on the advice of former players which was the case in a nephew of mine who signed for Warrington.

Sean Long was released by Wigan and signed by Widnes because of a incident which had nothing whatsoever to do with how good or not good he was as a player.

My concern is that many young players these days are not being signed from our own local amateur clubs like in the past which may indicate that despite the numbers of youngsters playing the game, the standard in general is not as good as in previous years.

Signing more players from WN postcodes than WA won’t resolve the “standard” issue. There is absolutely no correlation between that at all and to suggest that is a bit silly in all honesty.

Signing players from only clubs in Wigan is ludicrous. We could snap up every promising player in Wigan if we wanted and still have some slip through and sign elsewhere. It’s the nature of the beast, we can’t have everyone and to suggest so is again silly.

There’s all sorts of reasons players sign for other clubs; family loyalties, easiness of getting there, friends, money. The list goes on and on. You’re being very naive or incredibly dense.

You do know Wigan don’t have a monopoly and first choice of every junior player in the league don’t you?

They also don’t have a dispensation where by they have extra funds in place to sign all these junior players over any other clubs.

It would be impossible for Wigan to hoover up all the top juniors they do however look further afield than most and take on Leeds over the traditionally very strong Siddall clubs players and regularly come further East more than any other club from the North West.

I think you’ve quoted the wrong post but I agree entirely

I don't know if he's trying to say we're missing the good local talent, or that the local talent isn't very good. He seems to be trying to make both arguments at the same time whilst maintaining it's definitely something the club is doing wrong. Maybe it was just a relatively weak year group for Pats, Judes etc so we picked up kids from elsewhere, it happens.

How many other teams have three specialised experienced wingers in their squad? Didn't Saints play Welsby there when Makinson was out? Wire played Mamo when Lineham was out.

I’ve never really noticed how many ‘local’ players we pick up. If that 17 scholars, 9 are from Wigan based clubs (I’ve included the Leigh teams in that). Of that 17 you’d probably say half will drop off before ever playing academy or first team. Half of those left will leave before playing first team which means we’re left with 4 or 5 who will likely, at some point, play at least one first team game at Wigan. The second half of the ‘drop offs’ are likely to play elsewhere in SL/Champ/L1.

I don’t really care if we have a team of Wiganers or not, I’ve never really understood the obsession with it. I get the sentiment but being from the town doesn’t guarantee playing standards are higher or even passion for the club is higher either. I want a squad of players willing to do whatever it takes to win and win trophies for this club. I couldn’t care less if they’re from Leeds, St Helens or Pluto to be honest.

Exactly - Throwing out statements with little clarity to imply that something is wrong at the club

It always pains me to hear crap like this from so-called Wigan fans.

I've been watching Wigan since the mid-1960s and involved with the amateur game on and off since the mid-1970s, and I've never heard this comment made once when it wasn't maliciously intended.

Yes, sometimes young players are advised not to play for such and such a club, but that is nearly always because someone else wants them at their club instead. About ten years ago, a friend of my grandson who plays locally was the victim of several persuasive attempts by his own family to sign for Warrington rather than Wigan because they'd supposedly heard this, that and the other about life at the DW, and it turned out that his family, despite living in Wigan, were all die-hard Wire fans (even though they apparently never went watching, which says it all for me).

I do worry about you, sometimes, RD. The way you craftily slipped that unprovable comment in there ... it was just the kind of thing I'd expect to read about Wigan on Red Vee.
