Can't speak for Rouges but I'm happy with him for two or so years to help our two prospects, Tierney and Hampshire, for full back.
Two young yet very exciting British prospects as you know!
Ideal situation really, if the signing comes off.

Like you say, a decent signing bearing in mind who we've coming through our academy to play full back.
As to not being up to playing NRL so coming here, not the first and won't be the last. It suits Wigan's needs at present so that's what matters to Wigan!

Rogues said yesterday that Sam was 50/50 to stay....

thumbs up from me if it's only for 1 or 2 years. Even if he spends a lot of time out injured he'll stillvtake some pressure off Tierney and Hampshire. Plus he'll help with their development. If thisis all true of course.

I'm assuming he'll be on a decent salary if he comes too - huge risk by the sounds of it. Will Hampshire and Tierney learn much from him that they wouldn't learn from Radlinski?

If he was fully fit and not a risk, then NQ wouldn't have let him go

It's been fun.

The rumours started he was going to wire, his knees were shot was the general consensus.

I think you are putting far too much store by him being some kind of coach or mentor. If he is signed he will be signed as a player and that is IMO on what we should judge the signing on.

We employ coaches to coach, not players. The issue with those two is as much about physical maturity which comes with time. Time is IMO all Bowen would buy us but that is only if he was fit enough to play. From reading that report I'd expect one bang on the knee and it would be Roberts all over again.

We'll have loads to spend and not many places to spend it, and we have two quality youngsters as backup. Where's the huge risk?

Re: Matt Bowen signs : Thu Aug 15, 2013 1:50 pm
Part of the risk would be losing one of the quality youngsters I guess - 3 full backs? Think we lost Briscoe years ago as he was wanting to play more regular first team rugby

Loads to spend in which way? Salary cap limits us regardless and more of a risk is on a player who was being listed last month as potentially being finished.

If we sign him as a player, we use him as a player - we have coaches to coach players

If we sign him as a player, we use him as a player - we have coaches to coach players

Tierney - Surely doesn't expect to be our first choice #1 next year, and can see an opening coming up just when he'll be ready to take it
Hampshire - Will probably see a lot of gametime off the bench at stand off going forward. Then possibly taking the #6 shirt for 2015 if Green doesn't shape up

So no, can't see us losing either of them.

Loads to spend - We're losing Tomkins and Richards, probably our two highest paid players, plus Tuson who won't be on much, and bringing in Bowen and Pettybourne. Surely that leaves a load of cap space, but I don't even see where else we need to spend. Like others said, this just gives us time so we don't have to throw Tierney or Hampshire in at the deep end, smart move. (If true!)

Very depressing, losing England's best player for an over aged past it Aussie who really is struggling.
