I don't mind us having a punt on this player. As you say he can't be on much and he is young and is something to work with. Contrast that to Mr L from Hull who is 27 and was given a three year deal with the option of a 4th. Apparently also someone who also needs work (to put it mildly given how he has played for Hull their last two seasons).

Maybe they will both work out but I have to say whenever we have gone the cheap route since IL took over (Mathers, Pryce) it never has so far.

You are not seriously suggesting Pryce and Mathers were on a par with them they signed? Deacon and Carmont were seasoned pros who had proved themselves in SL and the NRL. Mathers and Pryce were far more risky signings given they had not ( proved themselves) and both had question marks over injuries.

That said I don't blame IL for going after those two given the circumstances of the club at the time v the salary cap. They could have worked out. Things have moved on since then and we ought not to be in the risky signings zone.

I don't see much risk with the NZ player provided we don't offer him a daft contract. Based on past form at Hull we have already offered a daft contract for our player from Hull (whose name I can't spell ) as we have given him a three year deal minimum.

Sorry, but that is full florid revisionist history.

When Wigan signed George Carmont, it was 'George who?" from a lot of people on this message board.

I'm not saying you were one, because I can't be bothered going back to check, but plenty posters saw it as a poor signing. Someone even suggested the petition on the Newcastle forum to keep hold of him had to be a p1ss-take. It wasn't quite the same with Deacon, but again there were folk on here who were baffled as to why we were signing him.

I'm not bowled over by this year's signings either, but let's be fair - the signing of George Carmont was greeted with great indifference by many Wigan fans, and yet turned out to be one of the best in modern times. Going 'the cheap route', as you call it - though I'm not sure how cheap Karl Pryce was - has sometimes paid dividends.

Personally I cannot question the ability of Gelling as I've not seen him play, yes he appears to be a big unit but so is Karl Pryce.

What I can question is his manner and behaviour, being kicked out of a top club for what he did is something to be considered. As a club we have created a positive professional ethos signing the right players, players who can 'fit in' in other apsects of the club, not just their on field performances.

We can hardly get on our high horses when weve got Gaz Hock playing for us can we?

Everybody deserves a second chance. Its not like he let a dog play with his bits or owt is it?
