That is the flip side i suppose.

Cant see any reason (from the comfort of my desk at work) why IL would not extend?.

would be pretty shocked if this was the case

It's hardly a gamble to make the call IMO. He's an expert at bringing these kids through and not all Coaches will share his and Lenagans beliefs.

I'd give him a 5 year deal but doubt Lenagan will and I'm sure not all Wigan fans would feel the same.

I'd be disappointed to see him go too, but I could also understand if a lack of silverware in 2013 led to his departure. We all hoped a revolution had started in 2010, and though I support Wane staunchly, it did seem to falter a little bit last season. If it falters this season as well, I'm not sure how long IL's patience will last.

Perhaps the two year goal should become the 4-5 year goal?

Lets be honest. The seeds are being sown to really develop the young guys into integral squad players.

Whilst it might mean that we are not singing in October, it might mean that we are singing for a period of 5 - 10 years (a guess, you understand) over the next few years.

Personally i would happily forgo silverware this year (and last) in order to be contending for the next 5-10

Its the long game we need to start playing

mind you there is absolutely no reason why we will not be right amongst it this year either

Great things are happening at Wigan and if IL (not that i for a second would profess to understand his requirements) cant see that, then i would be disappointed for the first time

Not sure i would buy into that tbh

Purely because we as a squad are in a pretty precarious position moving into next year with the loss of Sam.

Granted we have an abundance of youth throughout the entire squad, but that youth will need direction. Shaun wane has proven that he has the ability to get the absolute best out of the young lads. Principally because he has worked his own way up the rank structure and has helped nurture them from the early stages

Not sure that would or could happen with another coach.

I felt (before these rumours) that SW was more interested in building a legacy

Any other coach will be looking at results in the short term and this "could" be detrimental to youth development in the short - medium term.

This has potential to shaft us over the next few years.

Wane is doing a CRACKING job imo. I would be pretty gutted to see him leave.

The other problem is that performances like that we saw tonight, not to mention last week, should not really coincide with suggestions from SW that he may be headed Down Under if he doesn't get his deal (if that's what is happening).

If SW is talking NZ in order to force IL's hand on a contract, the timing of his team's collapse in form is poor. I don't get the feeling IL will need much impetus to look elsewhere if the team suddenly starts looking second-best.

Note - I'm not saying this is what's happening, but any suspicion that people's minds are not on the job would not impress me if I was the boss.

Does any coach of any team have the luxury to do that? At clubs with expectations of silverware you would have to deliver some to keep the job long enough to deliver a legacy IMO.

I am also not sure exactly what kind of legacy a coach leaves. I think one of the changes Madge made was to have the junior and senior teams do the same drills and training. Seems a damn good idea to me but couldn't a new coach just chuck it all out? IL can leave a legacy but I am not sure a coach can.

I am not Wane's biggest fan as most people know but to me the suggestions above are beyond the pale.

There really are times when I wonder what planet you're on.

You listen eagerly to CPWigan's ridiculous conspiracy theories, and yet you don't think a coach would talk about going to another club in order to get his boss to hurry up and offer him a new deal?

It's not like he'd be the first.

IMO, being a coach at the top level is all about making the top 8 and winning knock out games against the best sides. Maguire did both, winning 5 out of 8 of his knock out games against top sides. Wane thus far has won 1 out of 3 of those games. The main thing I take from that is that he hasn't had the chance yet, and that the initial 2 year contract was a bit too short. He would need to improve that record to be worth a 5 year extension though. One more year for me, 3 if we win the cup.

Creating a lasting legacy of that nature seems dependent upon being able to keep the good players we develop doesn't it? If we get players to the top of their game and they then get poached by the NRL/RU when at their peak then it seems less attractive.
