I'm looking forward to seeing Mellor get a chance in the first team, he's unfortunately at the minute out injured but hopefully we may see a few glimpses of him in the first team later on in the year.
He get's a big wrap from the coaching team and from opposition fans, yet on here for some reason he get's barely a mention, strange because when ever I've seen the reserves play (only four times last year), Mellor has always really impressed me.
Then again maybe I'm just easily impressed.
Also having limited exposure to Mellor, but what I have seen of him I have been massively impressed, my only concern he is very like Sam from what i have seen, one of them needs to develop a controlling/organising aspect to their game, probably why Deacon has been brought in.

To play together if he is like Tomkins they'd probably need a loose forward like Sinfield in the side because theres no doubt he's helped out McGuire and Burrow over the years.
As the years go by and McGuire and Burrow lose pace they'll become less and less effective imo. McGuire looks to have lost plenty of pace already and isn't the same individual threat he once was.
Saying all that hopefully Sam will develope his skills as the years go by. His kicking game improved as last year went on imo and with Deacons help he can continue to improve.

In may not be a popular opinion on here but Sam Tomkins reminds me of a young Sean Long. He has the same build and style of play. As the years have gone on Long has developed his game to compensate for his speed going with age and injury.
Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good - sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league - Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate - the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever - Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go - Saint94..Every team is in your feckin shadow, we all know - FIOS

I would say Tomkins has a much more unique running game.
Current thoughts - Mago out or get running up them plantations, get fit or get rid. Maybe a back up halfback, someone with a bit of experience on a short term deal. Big tall strong running second rower, like a McMeekin or Sironen type back rower.

I also think Sam has a bit of mongrel in him and isn't scared to stand up to opposition players when they mee maw at him and he is better at tackling.
Our recruitment for 2011 and beyond should be intresting. Our boss has the most up to date knowledge of the NRL and its players and presumabily would have a good network of contacts to use.
More home grown talent is important, but so is a certain amount of class from overseas.

Agreed. Now the coaching structure is in place, I think we ought to be sniffing out one or two of those quality signings we all know and love.
I appreciate that this season is still too early to call, and it may be that we sweep the board and lots of boys become men in the Wigan colours. But more likely a couple of weak links will appear and we'll reveal that we still aren't quite there. If so, I hope that by mid-season we've taken account of this and are negotiating accordingly.
It's not about filling your team with overseas mercenaries. But the occasional big name signing is always exciting. It gets publicity, puts butts on seats, reminds the current team that no-one is irreplaceable, and may add a major force to your arsenal.
The coaching set up is now complete. IMO the next step is to upgrade the scouting system. Steps I believe are already in place
We need to identify the talent around the Wigan are (easy), in Cumbria and Yorkshire (relatively easy) then the rest of the country (difficult)
Then we need to look at other young sports players who with training could become RL players (i.e. Union, Athletics, Basketball, Football, Gaelic Football etc) That is a major challenge and would need specialist scouts.
Finally and maybe it should have been first, Wigan need to look at their overseas recruitment to provide that x factor player that cruncher has already alluded to.

This in my opinion is something we really need to be doing, i have pushed this at other clubs with limited success, mainly in bringing Union players across as the support for other sports was not offered. I am certain there are individuals running around in other sports that would make fine RL athletes, the key is to get them while they are young enough/still able to make the transfer of skills across and are also willing to give it a real shot, attitude and athletic ability.
Most success in this area I feel will come from recruiting outside backs, frontrow forwards, impact secondrow's and hookers. The first club to really embrace this policy and give it a pilot run I feel will reap the rewards in the long term.
He's got the speed and footwork, but IMO isnt big enough, Inglis would run over him. We need centres and wings like ryan hall at leeds for international, imo
Ryan Hall may be a tryscorer and relatively big for winger, but he tackles - sorry ladies - like a big girl. And how many ran over Dean Bell, not the biggest of chaps.
