Can't quite understand the fixation with Hanley. His coaching credentials are pretty limited, in that he took over Mcrae's side, won the Grand Final, and was sacked not long after.
I assume that it is to do with his supposed Wigan credentials. Blood and thunder can get you a long way in rugby league, and Farrel and Edwards might demand that you die for the cause, but if you quizzed Ellery, I wonder where his loyalties lie? I suspect it would be with Leeds. Even at the height of his fame, I think he stayed in Leeds, living in the same block of flats as Jimmy Saville in Roundhay Park. So if he is still a Leeds lad at heart, what would he bring to Wigan except a drain on your bank account.
Personally, I would love to see Edwards back in rugby league, and he is a guy who expect his men to give everything for the Wigan cause. I just can't help feeling though that Huddersfield beat you to that button with Nathan Brown, and I reckon he will bring the biggest turn around this year.
What did Mike Gregory due at Wigan, what were his coaching credentials?
Being a good coach is not enough, you have to have the personality. Hanley has that.
As for the rest of the post regards loyalty, .
Great game of rugby league. Fantastic atmosphere, Wigan were breathtaking and dominant in all areas for the first 25 minutes, coupled with us making alot of dumb mistakes, then fortunately they brought McIlorum on which helped us back into the game. I thought some of the tries we scored to get us within two we're out of this world stuff. Towards the end we had to force it a little and we had a few things go wrong, i.e Monas kick on the first for King and Solomona going off who was causing havoc. Wigan were clinical in their eventual execution of us. Proud of Wire today and gave us a little glimpse to the future. Silverwood was awful as per, but I expect no less. Tomkins is a world class player and by far the best english player in SL. Wigan are a champion side and would be a worthy winner of taking our title as challenge cup. Good luck over the next month and a bit.
You are keen to pick fault with Noble, Im just questioning your idea that Hanley would perform much better. I don't think there many/if any better options out there at the minute. I'm of the opinion it would be very harsh for you to sack Noble after 3 games.
Surely it would not be a case of sacking him after 3 games. Much like Widnes with McCormack it is the culimination of previous seasons and the nature of the perfomances that would justify the dismissal.
So what you are saying despite being beaten by 3 of the poorest teams in the comp last year, we should not pick fault.
I have expressed mu opinions on the coaching situation and backed them up, yet to see anyone else offer a valid opinion why he should stay apart from..........saved us from relegation (debatable)......won trophies with Bradford......congrats 1 club wonder.
You criticise me hoping for Hanley but offer no defence of Noble or other options.
If you do i look forward to it, to continue the conversation.
Please advise me on which way it's debatable? Noble went from winning 1 in 8 games to keep you up. You ask for Hanley, but he has only won the Superleague trophy with one Club, the other he lasted for 2 Months so what does that Make Hanley?
Noble brought in Fielden and Dobson and this helped to keep you up. Noble also got you to the final eliminator last year with a squad not much different to the one you have now. I would go with Noble for a few more games and see what happens, Had Richards played tonight you'd have won, I'm told had Goulding made the right decisions last week you'd have also won that one as well. We lost 3 out of or opening 5 last year, 2 of them against strugglers Huddersfield and Hull Kr, if the board had reacted like you who knows what would have happened last year.
He took a div2 club from bottom of the league and took them to the top!
It would be a lot beter than 5 drives and a chat kick
Fair does if you mean Donny, as I can't say I know a huge amount about their fortunes. However, was there a club chairman spending money on players the clubs income didn't deserve? Who knows? However, on that analogy, with the NL, Steve McCormack will get the Wigan job, and I can't see that raising the rafters.
Noble brought great success to the most boring team I have ever seen. It is effective only for as long as you can attract the biggest and most powerful men in the league. He hasn't brought that to Wigan, because Wigan are not that kind of club.
I would like to see Wigan do well, just because it would break up the top two. Will you do it with Noble? Unlikely. Alright, he saved you from relegation, but you didn't have a relegation squad, and maybe Millward would have turned it around.

If my auntie had a cock she would be my uncle.
Lets deal with facts, we lost tonight, we lost last week. We sign good players who underperform, we player our best rugby in the last 3 months of Nobles first season that we have seen since. How have we progressed?
Had you been playing shockingingly for 2 years prior to the poor start to 08?

Doesn't matter how we'd been playing, you have told people they cant use the relegation season to defend Noble, so how can you use the 2 previous seasons to back your argument now? If you had been the Saints board last season you are saying you would have sacked Anderson after the start we had, that would have been proved wrong.

So you are saying a coach should be judged on his performance in the current season rather that his history?
Turned Leeds into League Champions in his first season, something many bigger names had not achieved in 32 years
Went on to claim the WCC, and then, despite being under the kosh from know-nowt Leeds fans, delivered another title
Likes to use the academy (IIRC about 11 of our 2004 Grand Final winning team came through the ranks) but will use decent older players if they fit in with his plans
Forget his World Cup with England, they were going to fail whoever was in charge. And I'm sure he'd leave that post if he was offered a job like Wigan.
So if Smith was appointed, what would you think of that?
I think he will end up at Warrington
