Your England Team : Thu Oct 20, 2016 5:06 pm
Ok so you are the boss and you have a fully fit squad, who would you pick? I like the squad but how the hell has Stevie Ward got a shot?

1 -. Lomax - Easily the best choice for me. Compliments the play beautifully and streets ahead of Sam this season, Ratchford doesn't quite do enough and Shaul i just dont rate.
2. - Manfredi - His pace, power and ability in the air puts him ahead of a quiet McGilvarry.
3. - Watkins - There by default. Hasn't had a good season but a decent end to it and a 75% Watkins is still better than his nearest rival
4. - Percival - Well deserved shot, Tried a few people there in the last few years but Percival is a natural centre with good hands and footwork.
5. - J Burgess - Streets ahead of Hall now in my opinion and stand out English winger (in my opinion)
6. - Williams - Young, enthusiastic, strong, fast, great vision - He get's in for a very poor Widdop this season.
7. - Gale - I don't think there can be any argument as to why
8. - Graham - same as above
9. - Hodgson - Been phenomenal all season in the toughest league in the world
10. - Hill - Can't believe this guy isn't in the NRL
11. - Whitehead - See Hodgson
12. - Bateman - Stand out second rower in SL for at the last 3 seasons. (would have reservations about his temprament though)
13. - S Burgess - A leader of men, Strong as an ox and the 1st choice 13 for me.

Subs
14. - G Burgess - Probably the best impact prop in the world
15. - Taylor - We all know how strong he is, can drag 5 men 10 metres
16. - Watts - I think he has been sensational all season and like Taylor is as strong as an ox
17. - Clark - His runs from dummy half and line breaks when others are tiring are crucial.

Current thoughts - Mago out or get running up them plantations, get fit or get rid.
Maybe a back up halfback, someone with a bit of experience on a short term deal.
Big tall strong running second rower, like a McMeekin or Sironen type back rower.

If everyone is fully fit there are a few certainties and a few difficult decisions.

Full Back. Between Tomkins & Lomax for me. Lomax has been better this year, Sam was good in the handful of games he was fit for (up to the Wakefield game). It's difficult to call because of Sam's recent injuries, all things considered I'd go for Lomax however if Sam gets back to form and fitness he could change that.

Wingers. Manfredi IMO is the best we've got, I don't think Burgess is at the level of Hall or McGilvray yet, in a year or two I think he will overtake them. Tom Johnston could do the same. I'd got for McGilvray as he has a bit more pace but it's a tough call leaving Hall out.

Centres. Probably outer weakest position, I'd agree with the OP going for Watkins and Percival, the latter I expect to end up in the NRL if he wants to go, he reminds me of Newlove, brilliant player IMO.

Stand Off. I'm not jumping on the Williams band wagon just yet. I think he is a very good player but needs to improve his decision making at crucial times before making the step up to internationals. I'd go for Widdop but expect Williams to overtake him in a year or so.

Scrum Half. Easy IMO, Luke Gale.

Props. We hale plenty of good choices here, Graham and Hill are no brainers, I'd opt for George Burgess and Scott Taylor off the bench. Plenty off back up too with the likes of Tom Burgess, Walmsley & Watts.

Hooker. Hodgeson to start with Clark off the bench. Hodgeson is a top all round hooker and Clark gives a great impact. Roby can consider himself unlucky as he is still top class.

Second Row. Again a lot of choices here, I'd start with Bateman and Whitehead and bring Currie off the bench, plenty of other contenders, the best probably being Ward & Farrell.

Loose. Sam Burgess, he has to be in somewhere. SOL has been and still is a great player but his time in internationals is gone IMO.

Having said that my team is probably different to the one I picked 3 months ago and will probably be different mid way through next year.

Personally think Hall is very lucky to get in the team this year - Burgess had a great end to the season and arguably deserves as much of a shot as he does. Really intrigued to see what half-back partnership Bennett goes with because that could make or break this 4N...

There was some talk that Burgess has had/is having an op on a hernia problem so he may well have not been available.

As for Hall I think he's earned his place over many years. I hear a lot of talk about picking on form but you've got to have that class in the first place. Hall like many at Leeds has had a tough year but I'm 100% convinced he's still one of our best two wingers and I think he'll thrive with that change of scene.

Totally agree about Hall, his physicality is crucial against the Kiwis and Aussies, whereas the likes of Burgess last year and Charnley before him have struggled and looked a bit lightweight against those two, despite arguably performing better than Hall for their clubs.

England squad to face France: Kevin Brown (Widnes Vikings), George Burgess, Thomas Burgess (both South Sydney Rabbitohs), Daryl Clark (Warrington Wolves), Mike Cooper (Warrington Wolves/St George-Illwarra Dragons), Liam Farrell (Wigan Warriors), Luke Gale (Castleford Tigers), James Graham (Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs), Ryan Hall (Leeds Rhinos), Josh Hodgson (Canberra Raiders), Jonny Lomax (St Helens), Jermaine McGillvary (Huddersfield Giants), Mark Percival (St Helens), Stefan Ratchford (Warrington Wolves), Scott Taylor (Hull FC), Stevie Ward, Kallum Watkins (both Leeds Rhinos), Elliott Whitehead (Canberra Raiders), Gareth Widdop (St George Illawarra Dragons).

I'd love to see Brown and Gale given a go in the halves.

For the NZ game I wouldn't be against Widdop at fullback with Williams and Gale in the halves. I think that a pretty solid attacking trio.

Broadly agree except I would have given Shaul a go, he really impressed me in the passed few month of the year.

Also I would have Ferres at second row playing next to Watkins, as there combinations and understanding could prove vital.
I fear that Currie (like Farrell) will prove to skinny to play internationally at second row, though he could do a job at left centre

With the squad as it is, I would go with Lomax at fullback and at second row start Whitehead and Bateman with Ward off the bench (you guys might not rate him but there are very few guys in world RL with his ball skills who can make 40 tackles per game)

You can't seriously believe that Ferres and or Ward should be picked in front of a player that has just won the Harry Sunderland award in the Grand Final. I like Ward, but don't rate Ferres at all. How many games has Ward actually played this season?

If you look at their stats for this season Farrell comes out far better than either of those two players. Where is this 40 tackles a game from Ward? Ward is less than an inch taller than Farrell and only 2lbs heavier. As for this wonderful Watkins/Ferres combination, weren't Leeds the lowest try scorers in Superleague this season?
