Too many players! Scrums : Sat Aug 19, 2023 2:03 pm
The game last night could have been thrown away by having too many players on the pitch, we were getting ready to kick off for golden point extra time and had 14 players on the pitch, we had the ball placed and ready to kick off. There was then a call to get Mago off he was going off and then started to come back on. He then eventually got off the pitch.

Scrums

How can a team with so much pace in the backs not score more from scrums, I watched the Roosters game yesterday and they scored two tries in quick succession from scrum plays. HKR did it in the semi yet it’s something we struggle with.

I am not biased; I'm not bothered who beats St. Helens.

I agree with this about scrum plays. With the speed of French and Field we should looking to exploit this whilst there is a bit of space to be had. Then again at least twice last night we had Mago in the stand off position from scrums to just carry the ball up.

I mentioned that to my mate any back can catch the ball and make as many metres as Mago or any of the back, it doesn’t trouble the opponents

I remember when we had briers kicking from the scrum and field skinning everyone, tommy was never as canny or inventive as briers, was a total job for the boys appointment as is lockers to be fair, would have preferred Longy in there instead, look how Brisbane play this year with Briers, Walsh is just like Field last year, unplayable

You do know Long was Wigans assistant coach about 10 years ago and lasted 3 weeks.

I’d wager Wigan have scored the most tries from scrums in SL this year.

A long way from Wigan

Re: Too many players! Scrums : Mon Aug 21, 2023 6:51 am
One of Wigans best attacking plays have been from scrums this season.

Field hiding at the back or coming round from the loaded side of the scrum has been our best attacking move all season - and in fact looks like the only bit of coaching we've had in attack all season ! - with the exception of the recent change in Smithies in starting to be a ball playing forward
