MIchael Maguire looks like somebody who can make a step change to a club in terms of performance, attitude etc. They make an impact, but that style of management is hard to sustain and work under for any length of time. Having said that, I think he would be a good fit here for a couple of years.

Exactly this IMO. Maguire is a first class change manager, and exactly what we need (again), as sadly much of what he brought in performance structures and attitude has been lost. IMO he could get even the current average squad back to the top of SL...then look for someone who could maintain and build upon that longer term.

Personally, my preference would be for Madge with SOL as his assistant, grooming lockers for the top job in 2-3 years time. I would be much more confident in that than the cheap options of peet, winder etc with wane overseeing it in some sort of consultant role! The fact you would need wane / another individual there tells you all you need to know. For everything they may have done within the club, they do not have the required level of experience to coach at the top level in SL. If Peet / winder are serious about this they really need to pick up a head coach role in league one or the championship and earn their stripes IMO.

I’m for Mags but then advocating for SOL does your point about Peets experience no good. SOL is also part of this debacle, he also has no other coaching experience. What makes you think he’d be a good Wigan coach after 2-3yrs? His playing career? We all know that’s not indicative of coaching finesse.

FWIW I am inclined to agree re Peet/Winder. However I also don’t profess to know the future so I will be giving them my full backing.

I have become , comfortably numb.

Re: Michael Maguire : Thu Sep 23, 2021 2:25 pm
I think a lot of the comments on here are based on sentiment. As an avid watcher of the NRL, Maguire looks shot, the documentary "Tales From Tiger Town" at times is painful to watch, when you see just how his players respond to their coach's pleas, they have totally under performed and his signings have proved a disaster, in the main part. I agree there is no comparison in terms of standard, the NRL is years ahead of SL, but I would have thought Shaun Wane would be the obvious choice to return, what we wouldn't give for him over at Hull is nobody's business.

Winder is the backs coach and has been for years even under Wane we could not break though from the 20 metre line hope he is replaced.

I think you may have misunderstood me. I agree with the OP on his concerns with regards to Peet but I will still back him as Head Coach - if that comes to fruition. I think we’re assuming Winder will stay when there’s no real guarantee he does.

For me there needs to be a full coaching clear out for a full refresh but equally I understand what IFL says about that and the issues it brings as well as financial implications in a time where we need every penny we can get. But as the old saying goes “you’ve got to speculate to accumulate” and though there’s never a guarantee a refresh would bring success, it would put more bums on seats in an instant. There’s a page on Facebook called Wigan Rugby League History which posts clips daily of years gone by, that were not so long ago, with near enough sell out crowds. I can’t help but feel that our coaching set up, as well as our playing staff, have a huge impact on crowd numbers and looking at us on paper we look demonstrably weaker next season than we do this.

I still hold the belief the future is bright and that may sound almost paradoxical. I just feel splashing the cash in our coaching department with a few shrewd signings will do us the world of good both on the field and in the crowds.
