Liam Marshall : Wed Mar 03, 2021 9:46 am
Just reading in the MEN that he’s ahead of schedule with his injury and could be back before the end of April. That would be a huge boost with us having cut back the squad depth in the three quarters. No need to rush him but it looks more positive than first feared.

Yep as you say, something to be cautiously optimistic about.

With a bit of luck the impact on his performance will be minimal and we give him a carefully managed return to action so he suffers no setbacks and is fit for the second half of the season.

Whilst I don’t wish injuries on us, the rugby league geek in me is interested to see how we deal with injuries in certain positions with the smaller squad.

We were reasonably lucky with injuries last season and that’s clearly what you want but that coupled with us having a bigger squad meant we didn’t really have any of the youngsters with no first team appearances going in to the season making their mark. Loads debuted in that Saints game and kids who’d played a couple of games previously like Havard and Shorrocks got plenty of games but this coming season I think we’ll see more of guys like Kilner, Pearce Paul, Hanley and McDonnell and I look forward to seeing how they go.

Great news, wish him luck.

This has got me thinking, being a winger Marshall is known for his pace. We've obviously had ACL issues with wingers in Manfredi and Burgess where on comeback they didnt seem to quite have that blistering speed they once had.

Is that just unlucky (for us so far) or are there examples out there (SL or NRL) where wingers have come back post surgery and been just as good/fast.

What I'm really trying to say is will we only ever have a 80-90% Liam Marshall to the one we had prior?

Tom Briscoe was still really fast after his first ACL.
I worry for Marshall, as pace looked his only weapon.
At my club, walker out for season and Lui 3 months. We have no fit half backs or fullbacks. Gale will miss first few rounds.
We are so desperate we are looking at Eastmond!

Great news, still very under rated imo. Hope his speed is intact.

As has been said, interesting that our 4 wingers from a few years ago have all had really bad long term injuries, Manfredi Burgess Davies and now Marshall.

Is there something about the nature of the position that makes this more likely or is it just coincidence?

It's the nature of the position in today's SL.
Wingmen are now expected to take the ball up in the middle and of course get tackled by men who can be huge.
Hence the reason wingmen are getting more injuries and of a different kind than in previous times.

If that's how the injuries are happening then maybe we should rethink our approach. It's neither ethical nor wise to keep churning through them this quickly because they get bad injuries every few years through the way we use them. Either change the way we use them or go for bigger wingers if we're confident that is the cause.

I’m not sure it’s as simple as us running them in to big men that’s getting them injured. I recall Burgess wrecking his knee landing from catching a high ball on the plastic pitch at Widnes for example and Tom Davies had an horrendous leg break, which is a freak injury and simply bad luck. As for Manfredi, his knees are clearly a real issue and you could’ve played that lad on the wing, at fullback or at hooker and they’d have probably gone on him at some point.
