Dont be picky. I meant some of the best young talent in GB. I don't think many would argue against it either.

Looks like he agrees with you.

It must be my powers of persuasion!

Again it would be hard not 2 agree that Mossop and Farrell are some of GB's best young 2nd row talents.

IMO the current Wigan squad has a really good contingent of home grown players but we need to start focusing more on buying some already established GB eligible players. You only have to look at the successful clubs over the last 10 years and see the impact signings like Senior & Peacock have had on Leeds, Lowes and Forshaw for Bradford or Scully & Long for Saints.

I agree, but who?

We will most likely need a couple of prop forwards and a new fullback IMO. Before the season kicks off those are the areas I would look at.

Fullback we are screwed. The standard of UK fullbacks is terrible. Shaun Briscoe is the name most mentioned, but I get the feeling it's more sentiment that actual belief he is good enough that is making fans believe he is the answer. The only other British alternative is Gareth Widdop, but he hasn't played a first grade game yet.

Prop forwards you're looking at James Graham, Jamie Peacock, Adrian Morley and Eorl Crabtree. All you have no chance.

I would look to try and sign the next bunch of GB prop forwards. Louie McCarthy Scarsbrook would definitely be someone I would look at. Apart from that you're very limited.

Promotion from within and looking overseas looks the only way forward.

I guess you are right really as without knowing who is off contract when it’s hard to access the current market. I think I may have confused some with my remarks about proven GB players as well. What I meant by that was players on the cusp or currently in the infancy of their international careers who can go on to bigger and better things just like Senior did for Leeds.

Still there are some players out there who aren’t unrealistic targets imo and would improve our team. I just hope when the contracts of the following players are up we are looking at them;

Ratchford
Brough(The one I want to replace Deacs at the end of the season as he’s a very underrated player with almost the same skill set of Deacs)
Shenton
Richard Owen
LMS
Briscoe (I actually like Briscoe and although I don’t rate him as the superstar FB some on here she him as I still think he’s the kind of guy that would improve our team.)

All the above mentioned players could be potential targets for us especially if we go well this season.

Again next season is all about little tweaks rather than whole sale changes. Although it’s never as easy as we make out on here next season if I was IL I’d go all out to sign Brough and Luke Bailey and no one else.

Ratchford - good young player, wouldn't know how he'd fit in with Sam, Joe Mellor, Stuart Howarth though - would you be signing him as a starting 13? 17? squad player? and how would that affect the others (the next club he signs for will have to pay a myleresque wage imo)

Brough - Player I like in many regards, great kicking and organising game which we've been missing for a while, doubt he'd sign for anybody as anything other than a first choice 7 on a good wage now though. And that's something I don't think we can offer unless we're sure one of the lads won't make the step up.

Shenton - good player who I like, but again any move i'd expect him to be a first choice centre and a decent wage increase so you'd be looking at a replacement for Carmont or Gleeson and a decision that we're sure we can't fill the gap ourselves, in which case i'd personally be trying to target an NRL centre.

LMS - good young prop, seemingly very settled in his current team so I'd suspect any move would be for a nice big wage increase. Could be a possibility when some contracts are up, is he the right choice for the wage though? I'm not sure.

Briscoe - 'defensively solid' but uninspiring creatively fullback, who i'd expect is on a good wedge since he was tempted away from FC to KR. Not sure he's upto the wage he'd command for a move and actually add much more than we've already got.

It's important when we're thinking about new players to think about where they'd fit in, who they'd either replace or block chances for, and the wage they'd command to sign.

Not sure if it's been covered already but Willie Mason is now a cowboy.

Have we missed out?
Not sure he'd have been worth the money we'd have had to pay but surely he would have given us the type of bullying prop we're missing?

Apparently it fell through, there'd been a few clubs sniffing around him since then, cowboys were one, Newcastle the other.

Like I say, it has been discussed here plenty of times in the off season but surely he could have done a job for us, providing the price was right of course. Think that could really be proven if the pair Hull have bought and Tronc go well this season. He still has the ability, just needs to be motivated. Still 29, a rough @r$3 and not got as bad a disciplinary record as some would suggest. Particularly when you compare him to the likes of Bird, Carney, etc.

Oh well, let's just hope we can get someone even better in for next season!
