Re: Half Backs for 2013 confirmed! : Fri Nov 09, 2012 2:55 pm
the players didnt want to play the systems that nathan brown had put in place. thats what went on at cas game, then it was the semi final...

grix went to full back and kev brown partnered brough.

saying kev brown wasnt interested and gave up as our captain is an insult to him and his time at the giants..for which he played a massive part in getting us where we are now.

we did have leadership and experience problems last season though... we now have fielden and kopzchak to help out here now

If London is Athens, Yorkshire is Sparta, a tougher community and proud of it.

Re: Half Backs for 2013 confirmed! : Fri Nov 09, 2012 4:25 pm
It isn't an insult, it's an observation and an accurate one at that. The reason for it is to an extent immaterial. Didn't believe in the systems, injured etc, all tinsel. He gave up, as did several others and that's the tall and short of it. You may deem it insulting to Kevin Brown but strangely have no qualms about ripping sheets off Nathan Brown who was just as important in the teams progress if not more. You have to give it to them all, good and bad. Kopczak for me won't provide any leadership but Fielden will. LO'D is IMO the closest thing we have to a leader because he sets an example with his enthusiasm.

Fielden will bring a lot to the side and will help the younger players including Kopczak.
As For the rest you're spot on.

TBC,you don't need me to stick up for you,but for my twopennerth you are well entitled to your opinion, regardless of whether I myself agree with you or not.

We seem to have lurkers on here who contribute little themselves in terms of thought provoking posts, just turn up to criticise others who do.

If you buy a season ticket, you have the right to moan.

Cheers for this. I haven't bought my season ticket as yet 'cos my lad said he'd buy it for me for some work I've done for him but I'm still waiting.
He's bought his and I'll make sure he buys mine before end of Nov.

I tought I'd come back and have a quick look to see if I got any responses to my original post. Seems it's provoked a bit of debate.

I'm still disappointed by having to go to plan B. i.e. not signing a stand off. As i said originally Luke Robinson has the heart of a bull and will give 110% to the cause. But the fact remains this wasn't Paul Anderson's Plan A.

I'm still looking forward to next season but the fact remains we need a bl00dy stand off. Problem is a good one is like rocking horse poop.

See this for Lee Gilmours take on last season. Unlike a lot of posters on here I think Luke Robinson has a very good kicking game. Maybe not as good as some but certainly a very useful kick.

I'm 100% sure they had a good go at getting a stand off - just disappointed it didn't come off.

Brough / Robinson will give any team a run for their money - but will they do it consistently enough over the season to bring some silverware to the Giants and what if ether gets injured? Just as an example Wire have Briers, O'Brien, Ratchford and Myler - I believe we needed that extra quality player to start the game alongside Brough with Robbo coming off the bench to scoot at a tyring team.

I'm not being pessimistic just realistic. I still believe we'll go better than last year and the forwards will give the backs a better platform to work with. The big plus for me is that with some proper props the likes of Chan, Patrick, Ferres, Ukama and O'Donnell will be able to do some damage around the edges like Manu and Moa.

Let's face it 80 mins of crap RL still beats anything any other sport can offer. I can spend £50 easy just going out for a meal with the better half (with drinks  ). £200 for 13 X 80 mins of real action is a bargain.

My issue with the halfback partnership is Robinson can do an adequate job at scrum half but not sure about stand off. Brough is a quality scrum half but again could struggle at stand off if he is moved there.

Robinson's main attacking strength is his quick scoot away from the ruck area. Brough is also very good at this being an ex hooker and also possesses a first class kicking game.

What both Brough and Robinson lack is vision with ball in hand and the ability to find a killer pass from second receiver.
While Kevin Brown did not always get it right he did set up a lot of tries with long cut out passes and i do not see any of the current squad with this ability. This may lead the attack to become too predictable no matter how dominant the forwards are.

It may be the best solution in the current squad but (i hope i am proved wrong) it may not be a combination to take the club to the next level.

The overall squad is certainly superior to last season but a key position that for me should have been the number one recruitment area has not been strengthened. I am not blaming anyone for this as i fully appreciate the difficulties involved in recruitment of top quality players it just for me leaves the Giants lacking a cutting edge in attack.

This sums up my thoughts on our creativity far more eloquently that I could muster.
We do have our last stand off as assistant coach so lets hope he can up our current backs game.
