It was a case of needs must. We didn't have an out and out fullback at the club. I think if you'd have asked Sharp if Thorman was a natural fullback he'd have said "no". But he backed Thorman to come good. And answer me this; if Thorman was so unhappy with Sharp's selection policy why did he follow him to Hull?
Personally, I think Sharp's biggest mistake in that respect was allowing Donlan to leave while retaining Reilly for one more year. I would've kept Donlan... there's no room for sentiment in business or sport, as Sharp found out soon enough. Ironically, I think that Sharp bowed to the overall fans opinion on that score, and he suffered at their hand later on.
