David Brown Tractors at Meltham was just about the biggest employer in the Huddersfield are in that time. I think that ICI were the biggest followed by DB Tractors and then the rest.

Useless fact No. 23543 - Broadbents made some miniature submarines during World War 2...I suppose it's a bit before the dates you were after though

yup, my Gandad worked for them.

Hollidays also were sponsors of one of the oldest RL competitions in the world, the Holliday Cup (which I think is now on display at the George)

ben Shaws a Birkby. Still there but less staff as i now drink less cream soda with my fish and chips

Was there not a big pickle company something like Haywards pickles as well

Ben Shaws is no longer Ben Shaws, Schweppes bought them a few years back and now jut use it for mineral water, Ben Shaws is now made "somewhere else" by a different company, not sure where or who, but I will buy some this weekend just to find out you see (Yellow Lemonade, best pop in the land)

You can buy Ben Shaws on the special "Local shelves" in Asda.
TBH, the Yellow Lemonade isn't the same; there's something missing. The Cream Soda is though.

I don't think they make it at Birkby/Fartown any more. That factory does spring water now IIRC.

And, continuing on the Shaw theme, Bentley Shaw brewery at Lockwood park which then became part of Bass.
