Sale of Leighs training ground : Mon Sep 21, 2020 3:59 pm  

Currently away golfing but a friend of mine said that Leigh sold the training ground to B and Q in the late 80s and I thought early 90s.

He also said almonies went to WBC and not to LRLFC which wouldn't surprise me in that era.

Any clarity please to solve a 5p bet?

My recollection is 80's, it was sold for £250k with a Leigh director, or former, taking a 10% cut as his sales commission. My understanding is it went to the club

Does that mean I could be 5p down Neil?

I recall playing on that ground as a fourth year at Westleigh High, so that would make it 88/89?

The ground was nearly sold in 91, the training pitch had gone by then

The training pitch was definitely sold mid 80's, I was coaching one of the Leigh Juniors teams at the time and we had a game arranged on there on a Sunday morning, we got wind that the groundwork company working on behalf of B&Q had been on the pitch on the Friday and had took ground samples, I rounded up a few of the parents of the lads and we spent the Saturday filling the deep holes back up. I would say it was '84 but it could have been '85, hope that solves your wager.
