Youngster Contract Extensions : Thu Jul 15, 2021 4:15 pm
Great to see six of our youngsters signing on for the future

Thewlis - 3 years
Longstaff - 2 years
Wrench - 2 years
Dean - 1 year
Doro - 1 year
Gannon - 1 year

The years given seem sensible too. Good news.

Excellent, hope they're here for longer and pick up some winners medals in our colours.

No contract for Nathan Roebuck though, disappointed with that. Always thought he looked very promising. Maybe Walter will be able to expand on the reasons.

I think they're about right, happy with the lengths of the contracts too. Thewlis is tied down long term, wrench has a good chance there. I hope Dean gets some opportunity next year and a chance to stake a claim for the following season.

I wonder if the length of the Dean contract is based on the club not being sure, or Dean wanting to see what opportunities he gets? I would have expected longer…

Given that out 1st team halfbacks next year will be Widdop and Williams, then Dean only gets a gig here when there are injuries to either of those two at Wire, so I expect that he will be loaned out again.

2023 season is when I expect to see Dean as a Warrington regular.

Is Dean in the York squad to play at Wembley on Saturday?

I'd presume it's the former. A teenager isn't going to turn down a multi-year deal at a big club. And if he wanted to move on, he wouldn't have signed one at all.

It looks as though the club, and maybe Powell, aren't sold on him. The three who got multi-year deals look at, or close to, being SL ready. That being said, Dean hasn't had that many opportunities to impress at the top level.

Progression to SL standard even with the fall in standards is really tough, and although we would love to see this list of youngsters all making the first team the odds are stacked against it. If we get 2 players from this group we will be fortunate. Three would be very fortunate. I think the length of the contract extension accurately reflects the chances of this current group, and even then they are going to have to work really hard to make it.

This was a 'block' announcement of Academy players who have signed new contracts; Matty Ashton didn't come through our Academy so I guess he will be announced separately when/if he signs a new contract.

I think it is fantastic to see these staying with the club and I would not be surprised to see all 6 have long careers in the P&B.

I know I am biased because I work with the Academy but the amount that have come through is nowhere near as bad as what has been made out; things are definitely going in the right direction and I am very excited about the future.

If you look at the squad being built for next year there looks as though there is a lot less overseas players than in the past which is hopefully the way forward.
