The problem will get worse simply because the number of infections is rising sharply and likely to continue to do so for a number of weeks. Because of the protocols put in place by the clubs it is more likely that asymptomatic infections and close contacts will be identified meaning that more players have to isolate. It’s a problem for all organisations and it will need to be addressed. Contact tracing only works if the number of infections are low, even the best systems would not be able to cope with the current figures. The government has taken the decision, rightly or wrongly, to unlock going into a third wave. Their argument being that vaccination has weakened the link between infection and hospitalisation. In this scenario it makes little sense to continue with the current guidance on close contacts and isolation. It is still important for infected people to isolate, and it is also sensible to identify close contacts, it just isn’t practical to have all of these contacts isolate for 10 days. If you did then 100,000 new cases per day would trigger several hundred thousands of isolations. You replace lockdown with mass isolation. As to our situation. Hull FC vs KR is off due to FC’s inability to field a team. I don’t know whether we will have sufficient players available this weekend but it could open up the possibility for us to play KR this Friday.
