It was with deep regret that the club learnt today of the tragic death of former Academy player Andrew Curwell.
Eighteen year old Andrew, who made five appearances this season for the club's Gillette Academy U18 side, passed away after an accident on a school trip at the weekend.
He joined the Rhinos Academy in 2007 as a second row having previously played at the Saddleworth amateur club in Oldham whilst attending Rishworth School.
Commenting on the news Head of Youth Development Barrie McDermott said, "This is tragic news and our sympathies go to Andy's family and friends at this time. Andy was an intelligent young man who loved playing rugby and had a bright future ahead of him. Just three weeks ago he finished with our academy so he could concentrate on his studies and I know he was a looking forward to going to university in the future. He was well liked by all his team mates and coaches and will be sadly missed by everyone."
All Leeds Rhinos teams in action this weekend will wear a black armband in remembrance of Andrew.
Tragic News for Rugby League.
THoughts with his family and friends.
