Family Friendly Fixtures : Fri Feb 20, 2009 11:34 am
Has anyone noticed there are an awful lot of friday and saturday night games this season?

I was under the impression that SL was moved to the summer to make the game more family-friendly. What could be further from that than having games on a friday and saturday night?

Great for young (or old) fans going out and getting hammered afterwards but not if you've got children wo are big fans, especially when games have an 8pm kick off.

This weekend there are only 2 games on sunday.

Ignoring round 3 as Leeds play in the WCC on sunday.

Round 4 has two games on sunday.
Round 5 has three.
Round 6 has two.
And so it goes on.

Does anyone else feel we are moving away from the more family friendly fixtures?

Unfortunately its called supply and demand, rugby league is not mainstream enough to get a saturday or sunday afternoon slot on Sky when its competing aginst the likes of football, rugby union and cricket etc.

Sky have won an awful lot of major sporting events in recent times and rugby league basically has to fit into the schedule, we are still a minority sport in Sky`s eyes and are basically just a schedule filler hence the friday night and saturday night slots where little else is going on.

I totally agree about having to fit in with Sky but that's only one match on friday and one on saturday. Why does that explain there being 3 other fixtures organised for a friday night?

It's not just about being family-friendly either. How are fans supposed to travel any great distance on a friday night and make kick off and then have to travel all the way home?

Is it not the clubs that say to the RFL what their preferred day and kick off times are for non sky games ? I`m sure i read somewhere that Quins chose saturday afternoons and wasn`t it Salford or someone else that chose friday nights not long ago as a preferred day for games ?

Looking at our fixtures 10/13 home games are scheduled for sundays, obviously a few of these will be moved for sky and I see your point. Unfortuantly sky tv dictates a lot of sport due to the money it pays for the rights. I don't see why a game that is not on sky has to be played on Friday/Saturday night, I quite enjoy Sunday afternoon games, especially when the sun is out.

Union is played by people who close airports after a bit of snow, League is played by people who would go and have a snowball fight with a 747

Rule 1 - Sky game on a Friday, Sky game on a Saturday

Rule 2 - Celtic, Quins, Catalans home games on a Saturday

Rule 3 - All games not in rule 1 or 2 should be played on a Sunday
