Are you serious - unlike plastic Scouseland presumably - the thing about Warrington is that it was never reliant on a single industry in the sense that towns like St Helens and Wigan were - always meant as a result we tended to weather economic and social change somewhat better than the rest of South-East Lancashire and as a result our culture is somewhat different to the rest of that area - from the Palladian Town Hall with it`s gates made for the Great Exhibition to the first publicy funded lending library in the country to the fact we are the only town in the area still to retain `Walking Day ` shows that Warrington has a strong identity in spite of attempts to compromise it during the 1970`s with the emergence of the New Town.
Love the place it`s just a pity so many decent boozers have closed in town in recent years ...

That's all they'll have seen of us in the news, though. Some quite unfortunate stories have arisen from our town over the past few years, which was part of the reasoning for the start of the thread. It would seem if people are saying things like that, there is still a bit of a stigma.
I've never heard anything about the metal detectors things, that's why I questioned it, not sure if I've missed something.

If people make statements like that when you say you are from Warrington though, then it says more about them than the town.

There has been the one major incident that has made the news (Gary Newlove) as far as I am aware, what are the others?

Ryan Kelly and Stu Lowe. The timing, more than anything, made them national stories IIRC.
I must admit the metal detectors is a bit of an oddity.

That's what I thought. Though I think he meant that in addition to Wire manufacturing, we've had other major industrial employers, such as Memory Lane and various textile mills, and have since been able to adapt once such industries went into decline. [/quote]

Just googled these names, and had heard about Ryan Kelly, but not the Stu Lowe incident.

Still find it strange that more than one person would use the description that Steve 51 mentioned.

Just to confirm... Im not a Union boy. I played Union when I was growing up at school, but we all had to in Northampton. No, Im a Cobblers (football) fan through and through. Truth be told I find Union boring unless its an England game.

I remember the metal detectors thing now. SkyNews did a 'feature' during the time of the Adam Swellings trial on Warrington's Bridge Street on a Saturday evening. Police/Bouncers were piloting metal detectors on people IIRC.

'Warrington' was the answer on Ant & Decs Saturday Night Takeover last night.

The question could have been one of many.
