Can someone explain the offside rule to me please (this is a serious request!!): when Smith's (pitiful) drop-goal attempt connects with Houghton, there are two or three Wigan players within 10 metres of him, and all were stood in front of Smith when he kicked the ball. Why are they not offside?

Because Houghton was deemed to have charged down.

Ah yes, forgot that. In my defence it was hard to judge it as a charge down given that kick. If it comes down to kicks next week, we should be alright
