Must admit I'm a little baffled by this one.

I wonder if Smith wants him for his contribution in the dressing room, and to help develop the likes of Riley?

If anything wouldnt it keep Riley out? Giving him abit of a coaching role would help the development of him, not signing him as a player :?

Yep I agree, as I said I'm baffled by it. Who knows, he may just be in there as a squad player to cover for injuries. Maybe his plan is to get Grix and Johnson in the back row, therefore needing back up at three quarters.

Tony Smith could sign Ronan Keating and I'd trust him (Smith, not Keating).

on the guardian website it says that monaghans injured his shoulder, maybe this could be quite serious therefore making bridge go into the halves and bringing hicks into centre freeing up a wing space for carney, thats the only thing i can think of but its an odd one for me.

Grix is a forward,so is Johnson when he is fit and Riley isn't good enough imo if we have aspirations of winning something he is ok as a back up to fill in ,in an emergency but never fills me with confidence ,Carney is a far better winger and would imo be a good signing, same as Mathers is a better fullback than Riley which imo leaves Riley as a back up squad player
a back line of
1)Mathers
2)Hicks
3)Bridge
4)King
5)Carney
6)Briers
7)Monaghan
is pretty good imo
our bench would improve with Johnson on it as well
