I read the tabloids yesterday for the first time in a while and, I must say, there's nothing like a bit of scaremongering, is there?

I read in one that "Gordon Brown must show that he is in control of it (the virus)" and then went on to say that if he didn't, he must admit he isn't up to the job.

Right, so a killer virus that could whipe out half of the civilized world should be stopped by the Prime Minister of a country the other side of the world from where it began... :!:

I sometimes wonder if the tabloids are having the laugh on their readership; a sort of Sally-esque, tongue in cheek Cliche playing or if they really do believe the information they (try to) feed into the minds of the population.

It's so that the nation will vote Brown/Labour back in because he saved the country from a killer virus, the story stinks all around to be honest.

We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die
The first ones in line for that pie-in-the-sky
And we're always the last when the cream is shared out
For the worker is working when the fat cat's about

I'd never thought of it like that, actually.
They must be doing something right then, they have saved us from Mad Cow Disease, Foot and Mouth and Bird Flu during their term(s). I even survived chicken pox in 2005; how lucky I feel to be a Socialist :)

the government will hope that when it comes to voting the people will forget about a credit crunch and instead thank the lord that the Government saved them from death.

It is, but its also not worth panicking about something that at the moment poses a minimal risk to people in this country.

The world's due a bit of a clearout. It was either going to be this or Yellowstone, so I'm thankful for small mercies.

Union is played by people who close airports after a bit of snow, League is played by people who would go and have a snowball fight with a 747

I'm actually surprised that amongst these conspiracy theories nobody has pointed out that the people set to make the most from this being blown out of proportion are the people involved in Roche and Glaxo. You can't pick up a newspaper without seeing the words "Tamiflu" or "Relenza".

I'm no expert but I know that pharmaceutical companies aren't able to get the funding they once were due to the rise in resistance rendering most new drugs useless almost as soon as they hit the market. They must be rubbing their hands when we all start panicking like this...
