Not always but often is. I just don't see why anyone would add people they don't know on facebook, or why players would want to make there private lives so public but each to there own - I also don't fully understand why fans would want to add players (unless they know them personally) on facebook, or how they know it is them and not some really sad sod who is pretending to be them.

But ultimatly its up to the player who they add as friends, nobody forces them to accept the odd strangers who send requests!

Some people seem to want to have as many Facebook "friends" as possible, like its some kind of competition. A girl I know from school has about 500 friends on there, when in real life she probably knows a handful of them. We used to call her "the olympic flame" because she never went out.
