Very well put MIAW. You can't win a game of rugby by defending for 80 minutes and when the belief breaks so does the defence anyway. Attack is the best form of defence IMO, in 2012 we had the best defence and the best attack and there fore best points difference by a mile. The defensive stat was largely so good because we made the opposition defend so much. What a year to be a wire fan (except for the end of course).

Invest in the academy and don’t make big glamour signings like Austin/Widdop/Inglis.

The Saints, Leeds and Wigan sides who have been successful all have a nucleus of home grown lads in key positions. With a few overseas players to just put the cherry on top, Wigan won the GF in 2018 with ZERO Australians.

Not trusting Robson to even play one minute sums up the lack of faith.

Too many of your players looked like they were quite happy for the off-season to start a week or two earlier.

Ben Currie? Absolute stinker last night, no doubt about it. But get rid? He's getting close to his imperious best and would come back and haunt us big style.

And I'm no fan but it would be nice to see one of our marquee halves put him through a gap in the way Patton did.

Don’t get me started. Not biting.

My thoughts, such as disappointing end to the season. For me Price has to go. He can’t survive just because of the challenge cup final win against stains. We have got to get a new coach who can mould new players in from the academy. One of the most exciting games this season was the youngster playing against Salford. As a club we have never really trusted or given the youngsters a go. We have one of the best training facilities in the league, one of the best modern grounds in the league. If any young player from the whole catchment area of the north west or Yorkshire was shown around that would be impressed until they met Price. That would not inspire you to sign. Instead we spend vast sums of money on players coming to the end of there playing days. Our recruitment team need axing whoever signed the likes of J CLarke and Sita. We need more home grown talent who want to fight for the primrose and blue not to do stupid tackles have be banned more often than available to play. Up and coming players are put if signing for wire as they have seen in the past few years they don’t get much game time. The likes of saints wigan castleford Leeds give the academy players a chance. For me I would approach McDermott

We invest massively in the academy but we need a coach who is willing to give the players a regular go. It also seems that we have been signing more local lads in recent years, hopefully we treat them well. Unfortunately we have lost George Roby to Huddersfield, and will lose more if they don't see a pathway to 1st team.

As soon as an established 1st teamer becomes available again the youngster gets dropped no matter how well they may have played, that puts players into a comfort zone.

An example was playing Charnley but needing to put a back on the bench probably just in case his shoulder dislocated again.

Just my opinions unless it's a FACT, in which case it's a fact.

Re: Moving Forward / What next? : Sat Nov 14, 2020 8:41 am
I can’t see past the Coach. Our team feels a bit like Saints under Cunningham, you could see they had good players, they just weren’t performing. He couldn’t/wouldn’t change what the team were doing, Holbrook reinvigorated them. We need a new coach to do that. Interestingly he kept on the same back room staff.
Once the coach has been replaced you can look at all the other details because whatever people may think you can’t just get rid of contracted players by telling them to go. You can’t magically change the whole youth set up (the Salford match suggests we aren’t too far off in that department).
Confidence needs restoring though. Poor Ellis Robson, plays well, gets given a 2 year contract is on the bench for the most important game of the season yet the coach would rather flog Hill to death than give him some game time. Something is clearly wrong.

We can always improve but it's simply not true that we have never 'given the youngsters a go'. Gareth O'Brien ( I am a big fan) had an extended run at 6 and didn't cut it. Dec Patton was given the 6 shirt for more than one entire season and disappointed. On the plus side Toby King - despite many on this board calling him useless - has also had a good run and established himself now as one of the best young centres in SL.

Putting your faith in inexperienced youngsters requires a coach with some steel; they will make mistakes, they will show their inexperience, you may lose some games as a result.

Unfortunately, whenever things go awry Price's default is to revert to the safe, risk free style of football and shoehorn in experienced players rather than tough it out.

I've said it before - if I was the agent of Thewlis, Dean, Doro, Johnson etc my advice would be move on, before you waste the important years of your career.

Come on admit it you had a small wobblettte. If you recall the origin of our discussion oriented around Moving Forward and my suggestion was that perhaps Hughes and Clarke were too similar and arguably I would say too lightweight. As you say we have a surfeit of this type of player. As I and a number of people have stated many times we need some grunt up front to support Hilly and Coops. I notice Saints have signed a prop this week and admittedly he knows the Saints coach which might help but it shows there are props out there. Why can't we find one is my question.

Indeed, the antithesis of Wane. So many opportunities this year to blood even more youngsters which he wasted. No pandemic and we lose Robson without ever having clapped eyes on him, Livett seems a missed opportunity as well.
