Mathers looks a bit of a masterstroke.

He does all the basics well, he gets himself into good positions to collect kicks, he makes as many yards as possible on returns, he wins the floor, he comes into the line as a third halfback & has the handling to carry it off (something we've not had recently), he reads the game well, he keeps the line structured & not to mention he has bundles & bundles of enthusiasm and I think that's a great quality to have.

Only two performances, but very encouraging signs. Obviously it seems that Smith seems to connect with Mathers in a way that Noble never managed too. I read an article with Nobby this week though, and he was really positive about Richie and seemed to genuinely want him to do well at Warrington, it seems he's a very likeable character who for one reason or another just couldn't gel with Wigan.
