I must applaud Briers for the way he has responded to the arrival of Tony Smith. I thought the toys would be out of the pram for sure and he would be on his way. I have been a critic of Briers but more so our reliance on him over the years. I remember playing Wigan (I think it was 2003 when Nathan Wood failed to find touch) and thinking before the game that with Briers out with a wrist injury that we had no chance. I remember having the same feeling approaching a john player final at Burnden with Andy Gregory out of the team pending a move to Wigan.
The constant comments of "When Briers plays, Warrington play" is great for Briers and his position within the team. I think previous coaches have suffered from our reliance on him to come up with the goods though.
If he can admit that he is approaching the twighlight of his playing days and can help the next generation of players by passing on his undoubted skill then I think he would warrant another year. But Like Rob Parker says in RL World this month if you can figure him out he would give you a penny for your thoughts.
