Thewlis and Ashton are very high benchmarks and i agree that Longstaff is behind those two, as they are the finished article as regular starters, more to come hopefully to take them to international level BUT "night and day" is a bit harsh IMO as I think Longstaff is meeting expectations without damning him with faint praise.
There's no doubting he's got the skill set and from what I've seen a wonderful attitude but a decent run of games this season and couple of stone wouldn't go amiss
