Re: Anyone going to watch the RU World Cup? : Fri Sep 18, 2015 11:08 am
I actually try not to be bitter towards Union but i find myself being so. I have an Uncle and Cousins who watch and have played Union and my Dad likes it too and i actually watched it quite a lot as a kid. But now i just don't like the sport. I don't like what i've heard and read about the history of the way Union has treated League or League players and i don't like the saturation of coverage compared to League, I don't like the posh-boy element (even making rough houses like Jason Robinson sound like posh Southern ponces) and i hate seeing our legends and ex-players there playing or coaching in that sport (we'll never see Sinfield in this sport again as he'll end up being some sort of coach in Union after he retires adding to Farrell Ford Edwards etc.).

I won't be getting swept up in the furore over the next six weeks. If there is nothing else on tele i still might find something else to do.

I will be watching Saints v Wigan tonight without a second thought.

I'm just looking at booking the Eng v Kiwis game at the Olympic Stadium in November and hoping it gets a good crowd as well as Hull and Wigan getting good crowds and all three being good games (ideally with a win each to start meaning the final game is a decider) - not that the world will know about it because it won't be promoted or advertised anywhere!

You make very valid points on coverage. The lack of media coverage on all things RL is frankly disgusting. it is definitely seen as the poor relation, played by oiks 'up North'.

That berk Bill Beaumont was on the radio last night trying to defend Yawnion from the accusations that it is still a posh boys sport.....he failed.

I followed Union all the time when I was in high school, the '95 World Cup I watched avidly. Since I got into RL, It's amazing how dull and boring I find RU. But there are a lot of dull, boring people in the country so it's not surprising it's so popular.

I shall be watching Wigan v Saints tonight, no question. Especially as John Inverdale is fronting ITV's coverage of the RUWC. I can't stand that scum of the earth cretin. Shame he's not played another game of RU recently so someone else can stamp on his face.

The coverage & top sponsorship is hardly surprising considering many of the media people & captains of industry went to the same public schools & universities as the top bods at the RFU. The old boys network is an ideal partner to Rugby Union & gets the game to the attention of the "people that matter".

I've no interest in it apart from seeing how Sam Burgess goes on and couldn't give a rats backside who wins it. Unfortunately my workplace is littered with illinformed who believe kick and clap is the only form of rugby. There was more entertainmant in 10 minutes of the Leeds/Cas game last night than there will be in the entire boring, self indulgent, over hyped, over priced 'spectacle' that is the RUWC.

Now I say dull and boring, but the only game of RU I watched and thought "wow, what a game that was" was England v France in the 6 Nations earlier on this year. England won 55-35 and there were 12 tries in the match. The only reason this score line happened was because England needed to win by more than 26 points to deny Ireland the title. If RU games were played like that one any normal time rather than because of clawing back points difference, then I might watch it more rather than the dull, penalty kick-a-thon's that normally occur.

One more reason why that boring shat and it's vindictive governing body won't be getting any social currency from me.

Funny (or convenient should I say) that the article fails to mention the fact that Old Trafford has hosted the GF every year since the first one 16 years ago. They make it sound like Man Utd are hosting it just to spite RU.

Its a NO from me. Whilst travelling the country and listening to Talksport I switch to Metallica the minute they start any World Cup discussion and very soothing it is!
